Have we had Patchway-Pilning?

The Down platform at Pilning is about 3 miles or so from Patchway and has been closed since the footbridge was removed for electrification. The Up platform is served by just two trains a week, both on Saturdays. Journey planners give a nearly 3 hour journey doubling back via Newport.
This could lead to a further question: whats the cheapest journey you can do on a per-mile basis?

You’d need the fares forum for that, it last came up in June:

It was a farce that Blackpool were given that service to operate from the start.

Real time trains shows it as running both ways.

here’s the old diagram.
I have just spoken to Northern. It only runs in 1 direction; Stockport to Stalybridge and not in the reverse direction, regardless of what RTT is saying

I'm not sure who at Northern you have spoken to, but it is running in passenger service both ways and has done (with the exception of certain temporary Covid TTs) for a few years.

Well I can only tell you what I’ve been told by customer services

Yes you keep printing these for me, I can see them. I’m just telling you what I have been told. Plus there is nothing in journey planners and it’s not in a published Northern timetable
Go and stand on the platform next Saturday at 0859 then when it turns up you can complain to northern about it not being advertised.

It's not running this Saturday. It's running just about every other Saturday and is in journey planners for those dates.

With respect, I really wouldn't rank a TOC's customer services as a reliable source of journey information. They frequently have out of date info or an incomplete picture.

There are plenty of infrequent services that aren't in published timetables. Many TOCs have given up on keeping them up to date. So that has no particular significance.

I’ll leave that one to you. They’re doing engineering work on that line next Saturday so I’ll let you stand on the platform looking silly waiting for a train that won’t turn up

Ok but that’s beside the point though. It doesn’t matter whether customer services have accurate or inaccurate information, I am just telling you what I have been told. End of. There is no argument, defensiveness or retaliation necessary. I feel this conversation is becoming pincer movement

If you know there’s engineering work coming up how can you not know the service runs in both directions?

It should run every Saturday, the job is LTP. Is it cancelled on the day due to a shortage of train crew?

hmmm let me have a think. Maybe, just maybe, when I enquired about the service earlier I was advised engineering work was booked for that line…

I'm so surprised we get so many replies in this thread. This must mean that the route network is bad that you can't travel on a train from a station to the next in many places.

A well-designed network, in some European countries, consists of long-distance express trains calling at major stations only combined with local stoppers calling at every station, where you can always take a local train to the next station.

Guide Bridge and Staylybridge normally have one direct train per week in each direction on a saturday morning taking 6 minuites. The rest of the time it's a rougly 40 minute journey via Manchester.

Interestingly it seems this saturday though they have a frequent rail replacement bus between them taking 20 minuites.

3 hours?

07;39 Patchway - Newport (arrives at 08;04)
08:14 Newport - Pilning (arrives at 08;33)

PM service is similar times with the 14;44 from Patchway, arriving at Pilning at 15;32 going via Newport (with a safer connection at Severn Tunnel Junction)

But plenty more on indirect services

As an aside, will Old Oak Common - Birmingham Interchange beat Barrhill - Stranraer in the future?
According to HS2's journey planner, OOC - Interchange will be 32 minutes. Interchange to Manchester Airport is planned to take the same length of time, and 36 minutes for East Midlands Hub to York.
