2D54 1824 London Marylebone to Stratford-upon-Avon waits at Bicester North for 13 minutes - not as long as some mentioned here but always struck me as quite a lot for a busy commuter line in the peak. The wait is to allow the fast Birmingham train to overtake.

That reminds me of the 1624 London Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill service which sits at Banbury for 20 minutes and sits for a further 8 minutes at Hatton, both times to allow for faster trains to overtake.

The line around Bicester North isn't that busy compared to further south, only around 3 tph.

Caught the 1147 Manchester to Windermere train last week.
Waited best part of 15 minutes at Preston and 20 minutes at Lancaster, arrived right time at Windermere.

It was operated by one of Northern’s new trains (195s?) are these much faster than 150s hence the early arrivals en-route?

Yes indeed, especially now 2tph branch off to Oxford. The 1824 is a colossal nuisance when there's disruption though as it blocks the down line, meaning that delays get compounded by conflicts between up and down trains at Bicester. Three trains go through platform 2 in 13 minutes (2 up, 1 down) so if any of them run late things start to back up. At least at Banbury there are 4 platforms to play with

Shame it can't be sped up to get looped at Banbury like the 16:24 (or some of the other Stratford bound services)

Yes, difficult though as it's 75mph with lots of stops and not may other places to pass. The Chiltern peak timetable often feels like it's trying to fit a quart into a pint pot.

Was is Tuesday (17th)?
If so, yeah - arrived 5 early into Preston (on a scheduled dwell time of 10 minutes) - even departing 1 late, I might add!
And arrived Lancaster ontime (on a scheduled 20 minute dwell), departing 3 late from there. Those three minutes made up between Oxenholm and Windermere.
Schedule for Tuesday 17th, here.

It is on a cl. 158 timing load, which suggests the 195 are much better in certain parts of that particular route.

I think you'll find that the long dwells are a consequence of having to give priority to Virgin services, something which does seem to go to extremes at times.
The 195s are faster trains than the ones they're replacing, but not 35 minutes faster!

I commute on this train sometimes. The platform 4 wait has been discussed on the Windermere thread. The early arrival into Preston is unnerving when you're still a mile away on the bus and RTT shows the train's already arrived!

Northbound Cross Country services tend to have a long time sat at Derby before going onto Sheffield, etc
