Trivia: places where another line runs through without a station

What places has a line that’s runs through or part of it but has no stop there? The obvious and most infuriating one would be Brockley, which has the Nunhead to Lewisham line pass right through the middle of it. The Catford Loop also passes through the western part of Brockley, but of course stops at Crofton Park. What are the others? And which ones do people wish the most there was another station there?

There was a station there called Brockley Lane but it closed in 1917.

It is frustrating that living in Kent that Eurostar trains on HS1 pass through the whole county without stopping following suspension of stops at Ebbsfleet and Ashford International.

The Chiltern Main Line follows the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines for much of its route through suburban London, passing Finchley Road, West Hampstead (missed opportunity for major interchange), Kilburn, Wembley Park etc.

Silvertown/City Airport/North Woolwich has the Elizabeth Line run near it without a station.

A notorious one is the Overground at Brixton, where the line passes almost directly above the Southeastern station. It also goes just south of Loughborough Junction station without any stops.

Lostock has no platforms on the Manchester-Preston line.

Carnforth has lost its platforms on the WCML.

I am an occasional user of interchanges between Thameslink and Overground at West Hampstead, and wish there was something similar at Loughborough Junction. It would be a great way of getting to/from Clapham Junction.

However, I think I would be a lot less keen to go out into the street at Loughborough Junction than at West Hampstead.

The Overground is on a high viaduct through Loughborough Junction and Brixton which would make a new station difficult to build.

I can think of quite a few stations like this:

• Ardwick (Various TOCs - Manchester Piccadilly to Stockport line)
• Barassie (SR - Ayr to Kilmarnock line)
• Barnhill (SR - Robroyston to Springburn line)
• Bethnal Green (GA - London Liverpool Street to Stratford line)
• Birmingham Moor Street (Various TOCs - Birmingham New Street line)
• Brixton (LO - Clapham High Street to Denmark Hill line)
• Brixton (SE - Clapham High Street to Denmark Hill line)
• Brockley (SE - Lewisham to Nunhead line)
• Carnforth (Various TOCs - Carlisle to Lancaster line)
• Cathcart (SR - Kings Park to Langside and Muirend line)
• Coatbridge Sunnyside (ECS - Blairhill to Motherwell line)
• Craigendoran (SR - Cardross to Helensburgh Upper line)
• Dalston Kingsland (LO - East London Line)
• Dore And Totley (EMR/NO - Sheffield to Derby and Nottingham line)
• Gospel Oak (ECS - Hampstead Heath to Upper Holloway line)
• Hyde North (NO - Flowery Field to Guide Bridge line)
• Jordanhill (SR - Anniesland to Hyndland line)
• Jordanhill (ECS - Anniesland to Scotstounhill line)
• Kew Bridge (ECS - South Acton to Brentford line)
• Kew Bridge (ECS - South Acton to Chiswick line)
• Knottingley (ECS - Askern line)
• Lostock (NO - Bolton to Westhoughton line)
• Loughborough Junction (LO - Clapham High Street to Denmark Hill line)
• Loughborough Junction (SE - Clapham High Street to Denmark Hill line)
• Loughborough Junction (SE - Elephant & Castle to Denmark Hill line)
• Loughborough Junction (TL - Elephant & Castle to Denmark Hill line)
• Loughborough Junction (ECS - Clapham High Street to Elephant & Castle line)
• Nine Elms (SWR - London Waterloo to Clapham Junction line)
• Ravensthorpe (ECS - Mirfield to Wakefield Kirkgate line)
• Royal Oak (GWR - London Paddington to Reading line)
• Rutherglen (SR - Glasgow Central to Cambuslang line)
• Rutherglen (ECS - Glasgow Central to Dalmarnock line)
• Sandling (ES - HS1 line)
• Shadwell (C2C - London Fenchurch Street to Limehouse line)
• Shoreditch High Street (LO - East London Line)
• South Hampstead (CH - London Marylebone to High Wycombe and Aylesbury lines)
• Stone (AWC - Rugeley Trent Valley to Stoke On Trent via Weston line)
• Walton (MR - Kirkdale to Rice Lane line)
• West Saint Leonards (SE - Hastings to Tonbridge line)
• Westbourne Park (GWR - London Paddington to Reading line)
• Westenhanger (ES - HS1 line)
• Whifflet (ECS - Blairhill to Motherwell line)

Some of these (like West Saint Leonards which comes to mind) have had proposals to build platforms but they have never happened.

North London or Mildmay line
• Dalston Kingsland (LO - East London Line)
Would a station here really be needed? You have Dalston Junction very close by.
• Gospel Oak (ECS - Hampstead Heath to Upper Holloway line)
• Kew Bridge (ECS - South Acton to Brentford line)
• Kew Bridge (ECS - South Acton to Chiswick line)
These are definitely pushing it. There are no regular passenger services over these lines, and, in the case of Gospel Oak in particular, no plan to have regular passenger service.

If I understand the OP correctly:
• Knottingley (ECS - Askern line)
Counts, because there used to be platforms there (and may yet be again, if the route to Doncaster reopens to regular passenger traffic).
• Ravensthorpe (ECS - Mirfield to Wakefield Kirkgate line)
Doesn't count, as there never were platforms on the L&Y route

Surely any settlement in the country, where a railway line passes through but there isn't a station, would fit into this category. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

You have missed the more useful example near here.

The Hounslow loop, between Chiswick and Kew Bridge, passes under the Mildmay Line, between Gunnersbury and Kew Gardens, but there is no station on either line.

Depends on your definition of "line", the ECML passes through Harringay and Ally Pally but there are no platforms, ditto the Portsmouth main line through Raynes Park.

IIRC the Picadilly line in west London passes through several stations with stops only on other LU lines.

I understood it to be places with multiple lines with some but not all stopping.

Would Euxton Balshaw Lane on the WCML count? Four track railway in the area, but there's only platforms on the slow lines.

Maidstone Barracks?
Please explain? The Maidstone East line crosses the Medway Valley line just to the north of the station but Maidstone East station is only a about 100 yards to the east on the other side of the River Medway.

¾ of a mile might be stretching it, but Gretna (more closely Gretna Green)'s another WCML example, although I suspect those writing WCML timetables are glad there isn't a station there.

Cuxton: has the Medway Valley line serve, but the Chatham mainline also passes through the area but with no station. If you're really stretching the boundaries, HS1 also passes here a little further north on the Medway Viaduct with no station.

Examples I’ve not seen mentioned yet:
Gateshead - station on the Tyne & Wear Metro but no longer a station on either of the southern approaches to the High Level Bridge.
Haringay Green Lanes - station on the Gospel Oak to Barking line but not in the Piccadilly line that runs directly underneath.
Shoreditch - station on the East London Line, but not on either the GEML or the Central Line which both also pass through the area.

• Walton (MR - Kirkdale to Rice Lane line)
This one is pushing it as you can walk between Walton and Rice Lane stations in 2 minutes if that, it’s like the connection between the three West Hampstead stations.

If I understand the OP correctly:

Counts, because there used to be platforms there (and may yet be again, if the route to Doncaster reopens to regular passenger traffic).

Doesn't count, as there never were platforms on the L&Y route
The OP doesn’t say anything about there having to be a station there in the past.

I would say so, too far away. BTW, what's your opinion of stations actually on the WCML, where there's no platforms immediately alongside the middle roads, such as Atherstone, Tamworth LL, Lichfield TV, Rugeley TV and possibly one or more others as well?

See item 4 above- HS1 passes through the whole of Kent without stopping.

Widnes has the freight only line running through it from Ditton Jct to Arpley Jct and used to have the now closed Widnes South which was closer to the centre of Widnes than the current Widnes (North) on the CLC line.

Are you referring to places that have stations which are bypassed by most services or places that have a passenger railway running through them but no station? If the latter, the list is as long as your arm. Even the former is quite long…
