Scarborough: Walking down to the signal box caused two members of staff to follow us down the platform. They were discussing wether we were allowed to walk there or not. As far as I could tell there was no logical reason why we shouldn't have done that though trains rarely stop at that part of the platform I believe.
Had similar at Rhyl when wondering down the platform to photograph the former number 2 signal box. Member of platform staff scurried after me, although this was with the laudable intent of making sure I was not a suicide risk. It appears Rhyl does to people. After proving that having a ticket for the next train out gave me a reason to live, platform staff was quite chatty about signal box.

For someone who lives in "deepest, darkest Northumberland", I'm surprised you might want to leave Rhyl to go home :p

Is it still the case at Inverness that barriers are only opened when a train is ready to board? About 15 years ago I was changing from a Far North to Aberdeen train and was shouted at because I walked directly to the platform indicated on the screens.

Yes, even when the Highland Chieftain is clearly visible in platform 1 everyone just has to stand by the barriers until it's announced.

When I was there the barriers just popped open right as it was announced, with no staff at the gateline (but someone had to have hit a button somewhere).

Around a decade ago I once found myself trapped on Peartree station as the intercom simply didn't do anything. There was a number on a piece of paper attached to it, which was seemingly for (as-was) East Midlands Trains control. I was treated with extreme suspicion on the other end of the phone as to how I'd obtained the number, but the gate was eventually unlocked.
I'd have been inclined to say at that point something along the lines of "I am a passenger on the platform who has been instructed to call this number as the intercom is defective. Open it or I will call the Fire Brigade to release me".
