The A82 runs within sight of the railway from south of Crianlarich to beyond Bridge of Orchy, although rarely right alongside.
Similarly with a lot of the A9 between Carr Bridge and Dunkeld. On a recent car trip from Inverness to Stirling we caught up with a southbound 170 as it left Dalwhinnie. Naturally we reached Drumochter Summit first!

We caught several glimpses of the train from that point on. Eventually it crossed Cornton level crossing in Stirling as we waited at it.

The A55 runs alongside the railway for a fair few miles beyond Conwy.
And also through Colwyn Bay, where, over a stretch of a mile or two to the west of the station, the railway was reduced from 4 to 2 tracks and diverted to the north, and the road built partly on the former site of the railway.

The M602 east of Eccles, mentioned in a previous post, is also partly built on land released by reducing the railway from 4 tracks to 2.

HS1 runs alongside the M2 for a short while around Rochester, then follows the M20 for a fair old stretch down towards Folkestone.
And alongside the A2 between Southfleet and the start of the M2

Indeed that bit of the A2 was reconstructed at roughly the same time as HS1 was being built there, to move it away from residential areas

Since we seem to be dropping the original requirement of "approach to a station" there's also the M6 alongside the WCML between Preston and Lancaster.

The M1 runs alongside the MML from J1 (Staples corner on the A406 North Circular) to Scratchwood, where the MML continues in a straight line towards Elstree & Borehamwood, and the M1 curves left

Two stations, Hendon and Mill Hill Broadway are on this section. Both on Thameslink, I'm not sure stoppers on this section would be faster then Motorway traffic?

I’ve edited the thread title to include ‘roads running next to railways’ as we seem to be covering that anyway, plus they’re not quite worth having as separate threads as they’ll inevitably end up get mixed up.
Carry on! ;)

The A830 on the run into Mallaig.
This was the one that instantly sprung to mind when I read the thread title!

I do enjoy the WCML along the M6 between Preston and Lancaster and again further North along the Lune Gorge :)

Fiskerton to Rolleston has a road right next to the railway connecting both stations.

The most well-known example in Hong Kong is the section of East Rail Line which runs alongside Tolo Highway for approximately 11 km, where you can see cars running alongside the train or vice versa. As the speed of the train and the car are similar, they can run alongside for a significant length.

There is also a 5 km segment on Fanling Highway / East Rail Line where they run alongside, but now noise barriers have been built as they cut through the centre of a town so they can't be seen from the other.

Nice section of line between Llandecwyn and Penrhyndeudraeth which follows the road. The road and line have quite a strong radius so it makes for nice photos.
And of course there's another photogenic (but much straighter!) stretch of adjacent road and rail a couple of miles further west....

Has anyone mentioned the A830 from Strathcarron to Stromeferry? Can't get much closer, considering when there's a rockfall, the cars have to drive along the tracks.

Several with parallel bridges - Keadby, Twickenham (actually between Richmond and St Margarets), Medway (HS1 and M2), Blackfriars.

to which you can add the A6 and Lancaster Canal

Of course if you want a real race you have the WCML and M6 through the Lune Gorge, with the added fun of RAF Hawks and Typhoons at low level often mudmoving down BELOW the rail track on the climb to Tebay.

Less interesting, A37 Dorchester-Weymouth following the old Roman road

Mill Hill Broadway is in the distance, this is one of the few examples which fits the original thread title :D

The A65 Kendal road in N Yorks runs from about Long Preston station runs along side the settle carlisle line on the right going north as far as settle jct and continues to follow the old little north western line also on the right nearly to Giggleswick at higher and lower levels with the railway. And also coming out of keighley the old midland mainline follows the A650 bypass as far as Bingley and going north of Keighley to Steeton and Silsden the A629 bypass follows the midland line.

There's a road that runs pretty much alongside the ECML between Prestonpans and Drem.

Image is from Google Maps

M5 in Devon from north of Exeter, until past Tiverton Parkway.
As demonstrated in this YouTube clip of 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe

Also in the west country, I'm not sure if this stretch alongside the Bristol-Exeter line south of Weston-super-Mare counts as it's not close to a station, though it's only about a mile south of the site of the old Bleadon and Uphill station.

I was thinking of the GWR mainline near Starcross / Dawlish and the A379. There is parallel running of sbout a mile

The A69 runs parallel and immediately next to the Tyne Valley Line in several areas, including a decent length section between Haltwhistle and Greenhead of about 4 miles. Apologies if already mentioned

Also the A64 and the Scarborough line near Seamer. I remember "racing" the cars along there aboard a Pacer as a kid.

Best bit is the M1 alongside the WCML in Northamptonshire where you can rush past in a Pendolino at roughly twice the speed of the cars, often more when the road is busy.

Of course if you want a real race you have the WCML and M6 through the Lune Gorge, with the added fun of RAF Hawks and Typhoons at low level often mudmoving down BELOW the rail track on the climb to Tebay.

That too. The Lune Gorge is stunning by rail and road.

I seem to recall that the Shanghai Maglev had highways on either side of it on part of its 30km run from Longyang in to Pudong airport. Overtaking cars whilst travelling at 270mph was quite an experience!

A11 near Hethersett runs parallel with the Norwich - Ely line, also in Norfolk, the Acle Straight (A47) and the Acle - Yarmouth line follow each other

Getting back onto the original topic of station approach roads running parallel to the railway, I can offer Todmorden, Mytholmroyd and Sowerby Bridge.

Station Road (West) in Grantham follows the retaining wall of the railway from its junction with Harlaxton Road up to the station forecourt for about half a mile. The inner relief road then also follows the line of the railway for a similar distance in the opposite direction (to the Asda roundabout, Barrowby Road)

I think there was a section of the old North Woolwich line that ran in between two main roads. Gone now though since it became the DLR.
