This thread would have been unthinkable a few years ago, when ten minute frequencies were the norm on busy urban routes and we had services like the 22 in Edinburgh running every four minutes

But, post-Covid (and with rising staff costs making occasional double deckers more attractive that several minibuses), how many remain? I can’t think of any examples in South Yorkshire (where “every fifteen” seems the new benchmark)

By every ten minutes I mean:

. Everything has the same service number, any other services with other suffixes/ prefixes do not count, I’m not talking about “corridors” (61/62/63 or 38/38a/38b) I’m talking about individual services

. It must be for at least three sequential hours a day without any gaps, so not just frequent at peak times (an adjustment between Peak and Off Peak journey times is understandable but I’d want to have the frequency maintained for a minimum of three hours without any wait if over ten minutes)

. Routes operated by multiple divisions of the same company are allowed (e.g. if First Bradford run journeys on a route shared with First Leeds/ Huddersfield/ Halifax then that’s okay), but I’m not accepting routes with multiple operators (e.g. the 120 in Sheffield is every seven/ eight minutes but shared between First and Stagecoach, so doesn’t count).

. However the 120 would have been fine about a decade ago when the combined four minute frequency saw each operator running every eight minutes, they both ran a service every ten minutes). Similarly, a route with competition (or a separate operators of tendered journeys) is allowed as long as one operator meets the criteria

. I’ll allow a little discretion over extensions that are less frequent (every ten minutes on a main section but then every twenty/ thirty beyond), but the “extensions” must be shorter than the “core” section

. Tendered services, Park & Ride, free shuttles etc are all permitted, as long as it’s a service listed in Bustimes.org as open to the public… But no employee shuttles that are restricted to staff showing their lanyards or “airside” routes at airports that would require you to have gone through passport control

. If in doubt, Bustimes.org is the Bible, rather than vague information on operator websites about “up to every ten minutes”

I’ll start the ball rolling: Stagecoach East Scotland 99 from Dundee to St Andrews

Reading Buses route 17 "purple" often has a 10 minute frequency, at times it's even more frequent (8 or 9 minutes).

The McGill's 38 is still every 7-8 minutes Johnstone to Glasgow Monday to Saturday and the 26 is every 7-8 Nethercraigs to Braehead, with every second bus extending to / from Glasgow. The 61 Paisley to Foxbar is every 10. I think that's it for McGill's - a lot of services that used to be more frequent are now every 12-15 minutes. These frequencies may also change from May when a large set of service / network changes are planned to reflect funding cuts.

The Stagecoach Newcastle 38 (Freeman Hospital - Whickham View) is still every 10 minutes.

On Go North East, the "core" bit of the 21 from Newcastle to Chester-le-Street is at least every 10 minutes during the day - but the rather lengthy extension to Brandon via Durham is half-hourly or so.

Stagecoach Service 12 Newton Abbot to Brixham via Torquay and Paignton. With a journey time of around 90 minutes in each direction with turnaround times it must take about 20 buses to service the route (10 minute daytime frequency)

In Cambridge route 1 between Arbury and Cherry Hinton is every 10 minutes all day 0630-1830 Monday to Friday and 1000-1830 Saturday.

4 of the 5 Park and ride routes (Madingley Road, Newmarket Road, Trumpington and Babraham Road) are also every 10 minutes all day 0630-1830 Monday to Friday. On Saturday the 10 minute service starts at about 0830.

It is interesting to see that this level of service is now quite unusual!

Stagecoach 61 in Carlisle is every 10 mins. It was previously 61 and 61A with a combined 7.5 min frequency so wouldn't have counted but all buses follow the same route now on a 10 min frequency.

400/U1 in Oxford (one route, just a weird number) is still every ten minutes, as are the 1 and the 5 down Cowley Road - every ten minutes each, combined every five minutes (same route, different companies). A long way down from even before the pandemic, sadly!

Several Brighton & Hove routes:
5B - every 10 minutes Hangleton - Hollingbury
7 - every 8 minutes Hove George Street - Brighton Marina
25 - every 5 minutes term time, 7-8 mins vacations City Centre, Old Steine - Universities
49 - every 10 minutes Portslade Station - East Moulsecoomb

Almost eligible are routes 1/1A Mile Oak - Whitehawk which are about 95% the same and every 6-7 minutes combined. The 1 on its own is average every 10 minutes eastbound but oddly, alternate buses follow each route westbound every 12-13 mins. The 1/1A is probably the busiest route in Brighton & Hove and during social distancing the combined frequency was increased to every 5-6 minutes, a very unusual example of a frequency increase during that period.

Surprised no-one has mentioned the 192 (Manchester - Stockport Hazel Grove) yet.

National Express West Midlands (when they used to operate bus services) had a frequency of every 10 minutes in the day time on route 9 (Birmingham - Stourbridge), and may do so again on an as yet unspecified day in the future ( <( <( <( )

In Edinburgh both the 26 and 30 run every 10 minutes, as far as I can see, although only every second 26 runs the full route to Tranent.

Quite a few in Brighton & Hove:

  • 5B - every 10
  • 7 - every 8, and every 10 on Sundays
  • 25 - every 5 Monday - Friday in University term times (every 7-8 Saturdays and University vacations, also Monday - Saturday evenings)
  • N25 - every 10, except Sunday nights, when it operates at a bizarre 20-25 minute frequency (same in University vacations every night)
  • 49 - every 10
In addition:
  • 1 operates 6-7 times an hour (so kind of qualifies) from Mile Oak to Whitehawk, but every 12-13 minutes westbound (it shares most of the route with the 1A, which fills in the gaps, to give a combined 6-7 minute frequency)
  • 5 / 5A combine every 10 minutes (so fail the test), but do combine with the 5B

In Crawley:
  • Metrobus 10 - every 9-10, or 8-9 for a couple of afternoon peak hours

I believe the only services in the whole of West Yorkshire that is every 10 minutes is the already mentioned 36 between Leeds and Harrogate, plus also the Wakefield Free City Bus.

Everything else including all the ex-Overground network run by First in Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield, and all the main Arriva corridors like the 110 and the main Transdev corridors like the 662 are generally around every 15 minutes now

Arriva A Luton Airport - Luton - Dunstable is every 10 mins between about 0700 and 1800 Mon-Sat.

The route operates 24/7 with a 50 minute gap at around 2 am its longest interval.

In Essex, the only routes with a 10-minute frequency are operated by Arriva.

Route 1, Southend to Rayleigh - 0900 to 1800 M-F
Route 8 (Colchester), Highwood to Monkwick - 0900 to 1530 M-F

Lothian 25 to Heriot Watt university as well.

I wonder how many of these routes have reduced frequency over the years but not reduced peak vehicle requirement because of longer round trip times and congestion.
