For example, Exeter Central is the most centrally located station for Exeter city centre but isn’t the main station for the city, whose accolade goes to Exeter St David’s. Colchester is similar with its main station on the GEML, but the much smaller Colchester Town station is closer to the centre.

How many other such examples are there within the UK?

Deepdene is the closest station for the centre of Dorking, though was only renamed Dorking Deepene in 1987 to recognise this.

More historically, both Derby Friargate and Derby Nottingham Road stations were closer to the centre of town than Derby Midland.

Depends where you define the Centre of London. If going for the most logical option of Charing Cross, then it is nowhere near the biggest station in London. Size may not necessarily correlate to importance but for me I would say if I had to nominate just one terminal as the “main” London station, I would go for London Bridge since it serves the widest range of destinations in different directions.
Salford must be one of very few places in England which has a Central station located closer to a neighbouring city centre than its own. Salford Crescent is not only the area’s more important station but also more deserving of the Central suffix than the one which does have it.

Gainsborough
That was certainly true before the introduction of the hourly Sheffield - Gainsborough Central service, but I think over time if that service keeps up, then importance will gradually shift away from Lea Road in favour of the station closer to the town centre. There’s not much between the two stations in terms of their physical size.

Whilst it's technically not in the town, Yeovil's most central station, Pen Mill, plays second fiddle to Yeovil Junction.

If we are able to include non-mainline stations then Newcastle. Monument is more central than, er, Central Station.

Wigan?

Warrington

Acton

Bicester?

Worcester Foregate Street is most central but Shrub Hill is the major station.
I would say Foregate Street gets more trains per hour than Shrub Hill. Especially as it gets the hourly Birmingham - Hereford trains, so it's the more major station in Worcester.

Pontefract. Monkhill is considered the "main" station, being served by Grand Central's London to Bradford services; and served by Leeds to Knottingley services via both routes (Castleford and Wakefield). However both Tanshelf (served by the Leeds via Wakefields) and Baghill (a handful of Sheffield to York services, currently buses) are closer to the town centre.

I would throw Newark into the mix - think Castle is the nearest to the town centre and more centrally located, whilst Northgate is a bit further out (easier for drop-offs though) - it gets more passengers and has the more comprehensive service to London etc.

Falkirk High is further from Falkirk centre than Grahamston is, though its up for debate whether High is the main station, it's on the fast E&G though and is busier than Grahamston.

Also Coatbridge Central, I'd say Sunnyside is the main station for Coatbridge.

And would Croy be considered the main station for Cumbernauld? It's nowhere near Cumbernauld town centre but is more than 5x busier than Cumbernauld station itself and is located on the E&G. Maybe everyone from Cumbernauld uses the park and ride?

I'd argue that Warrington Central is the main station there - certainly by passenger numbers, and by the importance and frequency of service to the destinations offered to where the people of Warrington want to go.

No-one has mentioned Cardiff. ORR figures suggest that Central station has four times the patronage of the more central Queen Street.

I was brought up in Salford in the days before the 1974 local government changes. Different people would probably have given different answers to the question "where is the city centre?" but one plausible answer would have been Bexley Square, the location of the then town hall, and quite near to Salford Central (then just Salford) station.

Wrexham - General more important than Central
Birkenhead - Hamilton Square more important than Central
Llandudno Junction more important than Llandudno, although they are kind of separate towns

There is no chance whatsoever of Gainsborough Central becoming the most used station in the town for the simple reason that the vast majority of people using the rail services from Gainsborough travel to Lincoln which Central does not serve. I also strongly suspect the hourly Sheffield - Central service will not reappear, when it was in place pre-Covid most trains carried no more than 4 or 5 Gainsborough passengers.

I think it may reappear simply because it allows the Leeds to Lincoln service to run fast

Wigan Wallgate is right next door! I suspect this might be a gag. Both Bicester stations are a trek from the centre, although North is less so that Bicester. I nominate Burnley as Burnley Central is the most centrally located for the shopping centre and high street and only gets the all stops Colne to Preston, but Manchester Road gets the Blackburn to Wigan/Kirkby services via Todmorden and the Blackpool to York services, which are much faster and better used.

Coulsdon Town (previously named Smitham) on the Tattenham Corner branch is in the middle of the high street, whilst Coulsdon South on the Brighton main line is rather less convenient. Coulsdon North lay between the two (until it closed). Despite its name, it was also south of Coulsdon!

If I understand the question correctly, Crawley fits the bill, since the station is right in the town centre. Three Bridges station, however, gets all the trains that Crawley has, as well as numerous others between Brighton (mainly) and London. Some might count Gatwick as another Crawley station with even more services.

If you define the main station as the one with more trains rather than the larger station indeed true.

In most cases, the main station (the one with more trains) will also be the larger station, but not necessarily the one nearest to the town/city centre (hence this thread!)

Any thoughts as regards the stations serving Bristol?

Worcester Foregate Street is most central but Shrub Hill is the major station.

Shrub Hill is the "grander" station, I wouldn't go for major, certainly not so much now. Foregate St gets more services and more passengers but is very restricted by space.

Considering there's 800m between the two and they both skirt around the centre (which is sizable), there's not a huge difference. Central (in the name!) obviously also gets the the intercity service and has far more platforms so is the "main" station.

Bradford. Forster sq is nearer the shops (by a gnats whisker) but interchange is more important.

I think Mistley station is nearer to Manningtree than Manningtree station is. By a hundred yards or so, but neither are central to Manningtree.

Clapham Junction (which has ben claimed as the busiest staion in Britain/Europe/World ?) is nowhere near the centre of Clapham, or even in it. It is nearer to the centres of both Battersea and Wandsworth. However, Clapham High Street, Clapham North and Clapham Common are stations all in Clapham High Street,
