Recent Wikipedia-tunneling led me to the page on the Ryde Pier Head station, and I noted that there is a daily night service (23:20) that terminates at Ryde St John's Road.

Ryde has a population of 23,999, so I suspect but don't know that it might be the smallest town in the UK to have a train service entirely within its borders? Stourbridge obviously comes to mind with its unusual service, and has 63,298 people.

What other towns or small cities - let's say places with under 100,000 - have timetabled services that only travel within their urban area? To be clear, this isn't about small places with multiple stations, but services which start, travel through, and terminate, within a single town.

Morecambe comes under Lancaster City Council so I guess Lancaster to Morecambe could count.

Fishguard & Goodwick to Fishguard Harbor

Not self-contained services, though? The OP isn't I think asking about small places with two stations that happen to be connected by a service (there are quite a lot of those), but services that start, terminate and run entirely between places only within that one settlement. So the likes of the Stourbridge shuttle.

Is there still an occasional Exeter St Davids to Exeter Central service, I know there was a daily one a few years ago?

Yes, spot on! So Wrexham, as given previously, would be another example as there is an early morning 07:10 from Wrexham General terminating at Wrexham Central.

The Corris Railway is, for all intents and purposes, wholly within the village of Corris, population 723. This has timetabled services between Corris and Maespoeth Junction.

However, Corris is not a 'town' and due to planning restrictions only return tickets from the Corris end are sold. It is not strictly possible to travel only on a single journey.

Corris is also one of the closest places to the Alternative Technology Centre, which has a water-balance funicular. Arguably this is in an 'urban area' with effectively zero population. It is also possible to make single journeys on the funicular. The other UK funiculars that spring to mind are in larger towns.

Does Yeovill have a service just connecting Pen Mill and Junction?

Yes there are a couple. 16.31 the return of a through working to Pen Mill and it then forms a Yeovil Junction - Waterloo service (which actually goes back via Pen Mill and Westbury.) And then the later return of a through working to Pen Mill which terminates at Junction then goes to Salisbury depot.

Stirling to Alloa? Basically within the same area.

I don't think that anyone who had ever visited both Stirling and Alloa would agree with that. Nearly seven miles by rail. In different local council areas.

There is.

If occasional services are allowed then I'd suggest Leeds-Horsforth. Yes I know the majority of trains go through to Harrogate but there's a limited peak time service that goes back and forth between the two.

In what way is Leeds a small town?
