It's all a matter of definition, I'd say Tyndrum is a village not a town.
A town should have a town charter which usually means either it has a market or it used to have one.

Historically it would've been down to which railway company built the line long that route. That takes the cake probably. But why does a village of 167 have any stations at all, let alone 2?
Weren’t there seven stations in the Burgh at one point?

Indeed. An as most of the route(s) is single track, might as well have a station at the passing loops you will need. Two separate companies built two separate (and unconnected) lines to port towns in the West Highlands. It would have been total madness not to serve one of the few populated settlements on the routes.
2011 census the population was about 9,100 but there is potential for expansion.Burscough has two, but I'm not sure of the population. Wasn't there a similar thread about this topic a while ago?
Hyde has four - Hyde North and Hyde Central on the way to Rose Hill; and Flowery Field and Newton for Hyde on the way to Glossop and Hadfield.
Flowery Field to me, always conjures up something very inappropriate concerning the female anatomy. Maybe it's just my very warped mind!!!
