Can I offer Portsmouth as an interesting variant. Terminus station, where a pair of through lines on one side go up in the air instead of diving underground.

Might Whitehaven count? Has a terminating bay platform for trains from the Carlisle direction, whilst the other platform sees the Cumbrian coast line continue on in the direction of Corkickle/Barrow-in-Furness, almost immediately entering the 1 km + long Bransty tunnel.

You can, but if you read why I’m asking specifically for through platforms going underground, you’ll understand why I’m not really looking at stations like Portsmouth & Southsea ;):)

Before my time, but the old Holborn Viaduct station would probably match this description if you can find any photos online.

edit: just seen this one has already been highlighted by @4COR . my bad!

If you stretch to “might have been”, you may want to consider Liverpool Exchange or Edgware.

Liverpool Exchange - depends on assuming that Exhcnage HL platforms remained open, but the cross-Liverpool tunnel was built for suburban services.

Edgware - if the Northern Heights project had completed, the station would have had mixed through and suburban platforms, with the through platforms going under the road outside. You would also have had the lines from Golders Green and Mill Hill East converging near the London end of the platforms.

A splendid example is Antwerp Central.
On many levels.

Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria were *planned* to be.

50 years later, 4-5 large german Hbf have seen suburban traffic tunnelled beneath them, Madrid has built THREE N-S tunnels, Zürich (smaller population than Manchester) has built two, while britain still dithers about how to add capacity to Manchester and Birmingham.

London’s DLR going west.
Above ground the tracks terminate at Tower Gateway.
Whilst a junction a few chains east of Tower Gateway takes most DLR trains another mile or so deep underground to Bank station.

Only Blackfriars and Birmingham Moor Street really fit the bill. The junctions for the Thameslink at Kings Cross/St Pancras, are a long way from the ends of the other platforms.
The original connection between the GNR and the Widnened lines would count, with platform 16 (renumbered 14 shortly before closure) on a steep rising gradient from the tunnel, and the entrance to the southbound imediately beyond York Road platform. (officially a separate station, but in practice no more so than, say platform 0 at Cardiff Central) The entrance to the tunnel can be seen beyond the end of the platform in this view

And here is a view froma train emerging from the Hotel Curve tunnel into platform 16 (the actual platform is on the other side of the train)

Nice old pictures. Those entrances definitely would have counted.

Going through St Pancras Thameslink before coming up onto the ECML makes sense operationally, but the old entrances did have more character. Of course, when Kings Cross Thameslink existed there was no need to worry about going through St Pancras either (nor was there a St Pancras thameslink).

Genova, Italy. Two principal stations, Piazza Principe and Brignole. Trains from the north and west arrive at the former and many continue through a tunnel towards the latter and beyond. There are also a couple of through underground platforms for local trains.

As far as I'm aware, all of the remaining platforms at both Piazza Principe and Brignole are through platforms. The origianal terminus platforms at Piazza Principe - minus their former overall roof - have now been lifted, levelled and converted into a car park for staff at the RFI divisional offices.

Napoli Centrale must come close. The Metropolitana ( which is main line, not a metro) goes underground not far outside Centrale.

That's true. I forgot abut the qualification in the OP.

Pre-Beeching Dundee would fit the bill, Dundee West was a full terminus, with Dundee Tay Bridge as the through station next door, at the other end of Dock Street Tunnel Dundee East was a terminal next to the tunnel mouth..

Would it? Although adjacent to each other, Dundee West and Tay Bridge were two totally separate stations. ;)

At Five Ways the line split in two, with the left hand branch going down the hole into New Street and the now-defunct right hand branch continuing above ground to the old goods depot.

In a similar vein to Whitehaven may I suggest Maidstone East with platform 3 for terminating trains from London Victoria and Charing Cross and through trains emerging / entering a tunnel underneath the station building for platforms 1-2. The route continues to Ashford.

There is also the added bonus of a major rail bridge over the river Medway and A229 immediately to the west of the station. Back in the day Eurostar trains crawled through the station as well.

so no terminal platforms then!
My vote for the most attractive version anywhere (seconding others) is Antwerp - a fabulous reworking of a station.
