Indeed, the 172s are all over the place. I'm sure I've come across at least one 172/2 (end gangways) with 'button after unlock'. I can only assume that the doors are controlled by a little black box with a standardised multi-pin connector and there's more than one version (presumably made by different Chinese firms in different factories), or alternatively there's just one version which had a firmware change at some point.

A few other bits of information.

The 314 had no door buttons and all doors opened automatically. Just like the Merseyrail 507 508 trains.

Regarding the 508 it was only the Merseyrail examples (508/1) that had no door buttons and the doors opening automatically. The other 508 (508/2 and 508/3) that Southeastern and Silverlink and London Overground operated all had door buttons and you could hold these down before the driver released the doors.

The 334 455 456 458 460 all allow you to hold down the button. Of course the 456 and 460 are now withdrawn.

The 700 707 717 all require you to press the button after the doors are released. Holding them down before the driver releases the doors does not work.

The five automated monorail shuttle things at Birmingham / Gatwick / Heathrow / Luton / Stansted airports all have no door buttons. The doors just open automatically.

All DLR trains, from my recollection, allow you to hold down the button. Unsure if this will change when/if the B23 stock enter service.
