Which train service in the UK calls at the most amount of stations (including both the starting station and terminating station)?

So far the most i can find is 50 stations which is on the Arriva Trains Wales 17:20 Crewe to Cardiff Central 23:37 service (2V12).

1 Crewe
2 Nantwich
3 Wrenbury
4 Whitchurch (Shropshire)
5 Prees
6 Wem
7 Yorton
8 Shrewsbury
9 Church Streeton
10 Craven Arms
11 Broome
12 Hopton Heath
13 Bucknell
14 Knighton
15 Knucklas
16 Llangynllo
17 Llanbister Road
18 Dolau
19 Pen-y-Bont
20 Llandrindod
21 Builth Road
22 Climeri
23 Garth (Powys)
24 Llangammarch
25 Llanwrtyd
26 Sugar Loaf
27 Cynghordy
28 Llandovery
29 Llanwrda
30 Llangadog
31 Llandeilo
32 Ffairfach
33 Llandybie
34 Ammanford
35 Pantyffynnon
36 Pontarddulais
37 Llangennech
38 Bynea
39 Llanelli
40 Gowerton
41 Swansea
42 Llansamlet
43 Skewen
44 Neath
45 Briton Ferry
46 Baglan
47 Port Talbot Parkway
48 Pyle
49 Bridgend
50 Cardiff Central

This service only skips out three stations (which are Pencoed / Llanharen / Pontyclun stations)! I would quite like to hear and record the automated announcement at Crewe (on the new Amey system) for this train!

I remember up until about a year ago there used to be a South West Trains service from London Waterloo to Weymouth which called at London Waterloo then Clapham Junction then Surbiton and then every station between Surbiton and Weymouth however this service no longer runs.

Can anyone find any service that calls at more than 50 stations (including both the starting station and terminating station)?

I think your example of 50 will have it

I did once come across the below service which must have the most stops per journey for the length of journey and must be rather tedious to be on!

2W80 2110 Weymouth to London Waterloo (arrives 0108)

  1. Weymouth
  2. Upwey
  3. Dorchester South
  4. Moreton (Dorset)
  5. Wool
  6. Wareham
  7. Hamworthy
  8. Poole
  9. Parkstone (Dorset)
  10. Branksome
  11. Bournemouth
  12. Pokesdown
  13. Christchurch
  14. Hinton Admiral
  15. New Milton
  16. Sway
  17. Brockenhurst
  18. Ashurst New Forest
  19. Totton
  20. Southampton Central
  21. Southampton Airport Parkway
  22. Eastleigh
  23. Shawford
  24. Winchester
  25. Micheldever
  26. Basingstoke
  27. Hook
  28. Winchfield
  29. Fleet
  30. Farnborough (Main)
  31. Brookwood
  32. Woking
  33. West Byfleet
  34. Weybridge
  35. Walton-on-Thames
  36. Surbiton

34. Bristol Temple Meads

Shame it doesn't call at Dawlish Warren, Starcross, Exeter St. Thomas, Weston Milton, Parson Street, Bedminster, Lawrence Hill, Stapleton Road and Pilning (not that the latter would be possible any longer) because that would've been 48!

Wouldnt LU trains , technically count

For example the District Line has 60 stations , and all trains are all stations .

Central and Northern are pretty long too , and call at all stations

For Heavy Rail ,what about the LM all stations Euston - Birmingham ( late night + weekend ) , or Thameslink Sutton Line Trains . Southern WLL trains stop at a fair few stations too

The Sutton Loop trains all officially change headcode at Sutton so are two separate services.

However if you rode on 2V25 1754 Bedford - Sutton and 2V26 2012 Sutton - Bedford, you could call at 59 stations without any reversals en route.

I have looked at the London Underground and various Tram networks and there still doesn't seem to be any that call at more than 50 stations. The most i can find for London Underground is 44 stations which is on the District Line. The most i can find for Trams is also 44 stations as well which is on the Manchester Metrolink.

Until about just over a year ago there used to be this Monday to Friday very early morning Southbound SWT train from London Waterloo to Weymouth which called at 48 stations. But the timetables have now been revised and this service no longer runs.

1 London Waterloo
2 Clapham Junction
3 Wimbledon
4 Surbiton
5 Esher
6 Hersham
7 Walton On Thames
8 Weybridge
9 Byfleet & New Haw
10 West Byfleet
11 Woking
12 Brookwood
13 Farnborough Main
14 Fleet
15 Winchfield
16 Hook
17 Basingstoke
18 Micheldever
19 Winchester
20 Shawford
21 Eastleigh
22 Southampton Airport Parkway
23 Swaythling
24 St Denys
25 Southampton Central
26 Millbrook
27 Redbridge
28 Totton
29 Ashurst New Forest
30 Beaulieu Road
31 Brockenhurst
32 Sway
33 New Milton
34 Hinton Admiral
35 Cristchurch
36 Pokesdown
37 Bournemouth
38 Branksome
39 Parkstone
40 Poole
41 Hamworthy
42 Holton Heath
43 Wareham
44 Wool
45 Moreton
46 Dorchester South
47 Upwey
48 Weymouth

The only stations it skipped out were these six - Vauxhall / Queenstown Road / Earlsfield / Raynes Park / New Malden / Berrylands - stations.

Have there been any services in the past which no longer run that have called at more than 50 stations.

I think there was a train from Pembroke Dock - Holyhead via Cardiff and Shrewsbury that stopped at loads of stations a while back.

In the good old days when the Circle Line really was a circle, how many stations did a train stop at in a day before it was pulled from service or reversed?
Same question applies to the Glasgow Clockwork Orange

The worst service we drive, one driver all the way.

Presumably after announcing the first time it will go on to repeat the many "x" stops and make the tedious announcement "please inform the train crew to ask the train to stop to allow them to alight".

But at least Crewe isn't in Wales so it won't be announced in Welsh as well...

When the District worked out to Hounslow West (alight here for the biplanes:)) from Upminster that would have racked up a few more. Of course, if you got thirsty during the course of your journey, and it was within opening hours, you could always detrain at Sloane Square into the bar on the platform.

I wonder how it is announced at Crewe, does it get announced as only going as far as say Llanelli with faster services to Cardiff/Swansea available?

As I recall the manual announcements said: "This train calls at Nantwich, Wrenbury, ..., Shrewsbury, Church Stretton, Craven Arms and stations to Cardiff via Swansea".

I've not yet listened to the recently introduced automated announcements for the 17:20. If she really does announce all 49 stations (and, worse, which stations are request stops), the train will depart before she finishes.

In the late 90s there was a through service (1500?) from Edinburgh to Wick via the Highland Main Line, that I caught as far as Inverness. Interestingly it was 170(3)+158(2) as far as Inverness, arriving into the eastern platforms where the 170 was detached, the 158 then reversed out to Mill Lane Jn and departed north via the Rose St curve.

I've got that train before. Got off at Nantwich though. I forget how many stations were announced I'm afraid.

Before leaving the conductor did announce that passengers for Cardiff should get the 18:09 (who would have missed the 17:08 which is the 1630 from Manchester and runs fast Crewe to Shrewsbury), he pointed out that the stunning scenery of the heart of wales line wouldn't be visible as it was dark.

The correct choice for Cardiff for passengers between 17:09 and 17:21 from Crewe appears to be the 17:21 to Birmingham and then change on to the 1830 Cross Country down to Cardiff.

If it's an automated system then I imagine it would announce each one, if they're programmed into the system that is. The once weekdaily Cardiff - Portsmouth via Eastleigh calls at Hedge End and Botley but these stations still aren't announced by Roger, GWR's male announcement system. Presumably they were never recorded. Ruth does however announce them at Cardiff/Newport.

Here is an automated recording of Shrewsbury - Swansea via HOWL at Shrewsbury. Please note: This is not my recording.

The 17:20 has been cancelled on more than one occasion, which is deplorable considering the majority of the stations it calls at are receiving their last arrival from the north of the day.

With the most recent cancellation, all trace of the 17:20 was deleted from mobile apps, National Rail Enquiries and train time websites. The only mention of it was on the departure boards at Crewe station until 17:20.

Could it have started right-time from say Shrewsbury with a different unit? Therefore only a true cancellation between Crewe and Shrewsbury.
