What do you mean, "illegal"? :?

I remember a Home office edict about 10 years ago instructing that forthwith anybody calling them inmates would be open to disciplinary action. We were told to be careful as a smart lawyer could have us in court.

It all came about because somebody from a civil rights group said imates sounded like zoo animals.

Saying that I have seen inmates written in Govt. papers so I don't think they can even remember what rules they've announced themselves.

The word "inmate" is still shown in the full-sized Oxford English Dictionary as referring to those who are contained in prisons or institutions.

Could this require amendment, noting what you say above about "smart lawyers" ?

Further to the matter of this thread, I note that a 15-year old boy was arrested at 1430 hours on Friday at a school in Hattersley on suspicion of assisting an offender. He has been bailed pending further inquiries.

You can call prisoners whatever you want. It is not illegal to call them inmates.

I have deleted illegal from my earlier post as I think it's probably more of a good practice and advisory thing.

I did say in a later post though that it was still to be found in Govt. bits and pieces.

It is a fact though that all prison staff in a routine information notice were told that to call a prisoner anything other than that were open to disciplinary action.

Agreed John. I can't say I agree with it, but it would be a disciplinary rather than an arrest! :)
