Morning,

Just caught the 0445 from Twyford to Paddington and was surprised to see the ticket machine offering to sell me a Off-Peak Day Return for £12.50 - I was expecting to have to pay peak rates. The ticket man on board didn't seem to mind although he only very briefly glanced at my ticket. He was much more interested in selling full price singles to all the drunks from Reading - first night of freshers week and lots of locals had come out to join in the festivities!

So is an Off-Peak valid on this serivce? I'm making the same journey tomorrow - could I get an Off-Peak Travelcard?

What time did you buy the ticket? Could it be that the TVM is applying the new 04.29 end of day rule? (which isn't due to come in until 5th October)

I bought the ticket at 0444 from the machine. Seems odd that it sells you a ticket that isn't valid. Usually they won't sell off peak tickets when they aren't valid.

The logic of off peak pricing is pretty ridiculous at present.

Why should super early morning journeys be treated as "peak"?
Well, exactly.

The 0138 York-Manchester is valid on Off Peak tickets that were bought by 2359. Buy them from midnight onwards, and you need an Anytime ticket. Simple! ;)
