Looking at that NR map, I just think that looks awful. It gives no detail about what journeys might be possible, and if you want to go anywhere near London, Cardiff, Birmingham or the North you're pretty much out of luck. Project Mapping any day.

Plus Project Mapping actually gets updated and makes changes when errors are noticed...

You have to bear in mind that this map was published with the printed edition of the GBTT (and later with the pdf version).

The table numbers beside each route correspond to tables in the GBTT - although some of these have now changed. That way you could see where you could go to.

For many people it's the definitive map as anyone of a certain age will have been used to it as the standard. It also treated the railway network as a national network, rather than one of separate railway companies.

On the reverse side of the printed map were schematic maps for each of the following regions:

London & South East;
Cardiff & Bristol;
Southampton & Portsmouth;
Birmingham & West Midlands;
Liverpool. Manchester. Leeds & Sheffield;
Newcastle; and
Glasgow & Edinburgh.

Network Rail continued to update the pdf maps until the 2013-14 GBTT, after which some bright spark decided they weren't necessary anymore.

I've attached a few of them - the one for The North is too big to upload.

Horses for courses - people's preferences will differ.

Here's the schematic map for the North from the previous timetable.

Right. I think we can fix that.

I've fired up Illustrator and added the (UK) changes you mentioned. All completely unofficial, of course, and NR and the very talented cartographers at Pindar bear no responsibility for my hacking it about. Still, here's the result:

Let me know of any I've missed.

Only one I can see missing is Ilkeston.

(For a downloadable map I do prefer the New Adlestrop Railway Atlas, but I may be biased. ;) )

There will some table number changes - I'll try to compile a list.

Wow! Some excellent updates from the good doctor. Well done!

I think we've accounted for all the updates, but am curious if anyone can point out if we've missed anything?

There are a few possibilities for future updates, such as:

- Showing railway lines proposed to be restored where funding has been established.
- Showing proposed HS2 lines.
- Showing railway lines that are under construction.
- And of course showing new railway lines as they come into being, such as Okehampton to Plymouth. ;)

I enjoy perusing the New Adlestrop Railway Atlas and look forward to the atlas expanding to cover the entire England, Wales and Scotland.

S.K. Baker's Rail Atlas (14th edn) is the best books of maps if you are interested in non-passenger and heritage lines as well as NR passenger lines. However it doesn't show Table numbers.

If you are a hard core micro gricer interested in individual tracks, crossovers etc then you need the Quail track diagrams.

There's Conon Bridge in Scotland, and then the 3 new West Yorkshire stations add Apperley Bridge, kirkstall Forge and Low Moor, though those three would probably be on the inset map section.
I'm surprised Pontefract doesn't appear on the main map and the GC route from Bradford to Doncaster via Wakefield and Pontefract has never been clearly shown on the map.

Great to see the map being updated. I've always thought that all stations should display a geographic map just to show what areas of the country are covered by the railways even if not showing all stations. I think the geopgraphic UK map most definitely has a place alongside schematic maps.

Table 36 doesn't cover the S and C and Morecambe any more, it stops at Skipton. Table 40 for points beyond Skipton now.

.

Track Atlas of Mainland Britain (Platform 5) is much better than Baker's. Much more detail shown including mileages.

Here's an excel file with the table number changes that I've spotted that need to be incorporated into those maps.

Would you consider adding 'Atlas last updated on dd/mm/yy' to this page?

I (and no doubt others) download a copy to use on my travels where there is no WiFi/Mobile signal - the 'last updated' date would tell me if I need to update my offline copy.

Thanks again for this excellent atlas.

I've uploaded a version with revised table numbers to http://www.systemed.net/carto/network_rail_national_map.pdf . Huge thanks to berneyarms for the legwork in spotting the changes.

Having taken the bus timetable numbers out, I figured there's actually not a lot of point retaining the blue dotted lines for the buses: they're a fairly arbitrary set of buses, some with through ticketing, some without. I don't see a lot of justification for showing (say) the Cambridge-Oxford X5 but not the TrawsCymru network, for example. So I've taken the dotted lines out, though retained the ferries.

duffield - good idea, will do that next time I update it!

You're also missing Conon Bridge station.
