My sons on an XC from Newcastle to York, delayed 15 mins at Darlo. According to NRE it’s due to “the train being cleaned specially”, but according to the conductor it’s because some oily bags got wedged between the wheel and the brakes and caught fire.

"the train being cleaned specially" seems to make it's appearances round my patch on Sunday mornings. Presumably vomit comets not being cleaned after their Saturday night jaunts down to London and then train crew opening a Pandora's box of nastiness when they prep the unit on a Sunday morning!

LUL have recently been using "absence of train operator" as an excuse which makes it sound like they just haven't turned up to work - as opposed to "staff shortages" which is more accurate!

Northern have been giving out that excuse/reason for well over six months. When does an "unusual" situation become the "usual" situation ?

Well, 10 days later we haven't got an answer 'from the horses mouth', so I will stick with my belief that it was another one of (now departed) Northern's excuses.

This service was cancelled due to an error having been made.
The code (OC) at the end is actually much more use than this message is...

Code OC is described in the Delay Attribution Guide as a delay attributed to the "Signaller, including wrong routing and wrong ETCS/ ERTMS instruction" - it is usually used for trains being signalled along an incorrect route by the signaller. Delays/cancellations down to a driver taking a wrong route would be split between TG (driver) and OC (signaller), as it's half the signaller's fault for wrong-routing the train, and half the driver's fault for accepting the wrong route.

Note there's a separate code OB for wrong regulation, i.e. a signaller sending trains on the right route but in the wrong order.
(There's surely a Morecambe and Wise joke in there somewhere...)

Northern olr has a new excuse. When no train. ie more trains than usual needing repair or being replaced by a slower train. Has been replaced by wait for it. New excuse. due to the train being specially cleaned. Amazing excuse don't you think, what a new excuse to come up with especially as the cleaning off trains is high on northerns olr agenda. Why not use this one and get away with it as well. Especially as when there is no unit available. And you can lie to the public and passengers in making them believe that your serious in train cleaning and backing it up by the other missionary, statement off theirs things will not improve overnight. amazing the train being specialist cleaned.

They had some units stuck on ardwick and Leeds same excuse. Yes cleaning is needed but also regroups to issues off no units to use as a alternative in reserve and had northern like tfw. Just been a little more sensible with the Pacer prm tsi 2020 dispensation and kept a few more and did it to end September 2020 say to cover for even the summer service strengthening ie hope valley etc or s+c lines. Then there would less off these excuses going around. And in reality its only now they amount off Pacers sent off realese in December should have been sent now. However back to thread yes it will be interesting to hear what more excuses will be excuse for a cancellation. On Monday another one was late off Depot. But that could be being prepared maybe signalling etc. However interesting to see the excuses though

New Northern have been saying since before they started that they were going to deep clean the trains. This is probably that.

Remember that the wording you see on real time trains is their wording for each delay code.

Whilst VE may literally mean 'fare evaders' under the Delay Attribution Guide, delay attribution is to root cause. It could have been staff assault when fare vaders were challenged for tickets, for example.

Also delay codes often get updated when more information comes available or someone with more time can look into it and amends it to something that is more accurate.
I find semi regularly that a problem currently under investigation reminds that and is never updated! I only know how many TOCs do this but SWR definitely do.

Today the 7:06 arrival from London Bridge to Guildford and the 7:12 departure to London Bridge were terminated and started short at Effingham Junction. These are Southern branded services. At no time they update to the problem under investigation reason on National Rail Enquiries.

The 7:04 arrival, ahead of if, into Guildford was running 3 to 4 minutes late and that must be the reason for the change. I say this as other times it's late they provide a late trian running in front reason.

This is the difference between delay attribution and public facing delay reasons. If the information is relying on the delay attribution code, then this goes to root cause. The true question is why is this the train in front of it late, and that could well be a problem that is still under investigation.

I quite agree but for every late running train in front of a delayed train or congestion, someone must also be currently investigating a problem.

It's just not on . Last week the only 4 available. 142s we all in use. This week 2 spare at newton Heath T.M.D doing nothing. Put them on rose Hill or anywhere and it means more trains can. Run. About Time at least to may. The Tory politicians swallow a bit off pride. And realise with olr Pacers can actually achieve them. Some better performance right away from day one. What is different this week compared to last. I just don't understand why. At times.

What was unusual was the the fact it was 3 different rail companies . An avanti London Blackpool train a transpennine service and a northern service.
