Hello,

Does anyone know if I can pay an excess fare to be able to use an off-peak return from London to Porthmadog to travel up to Blaenau Ffestiniog instead on the outward and return from Porthmadog? I want to avoid hours on a bus I would have to take travelling to Porthmadog this Thursday because of engineering work.

Thanks!

Before you travel go to a ticket office and ask for an excess. You'll then be charged the difference between what you paid and the cost of the journey you are making.

You'll be given extra tickets which you need to keep alongside the original.

Thanks for the quick answer. Can this be done with any non-advanced ticket? I tried it before for journeys and had a mixed success (eg Worthing - London Terminals, but wanted to go to Richmond on way back). I feel sometimes its the ticket office clerk not being helpful.

Thanks,

Is it possible to do an overdistance excess if you have station A-B-C on a line, and you have a ticket from A-B but want to go from A-C in either or both directions.
However, if you have lines A-B-C and A-B-D, where the routes to C and D diverge at B, if you held an A-C ticket it would not be possible to do an excess fare as you are on a diverging route rather than simply going overdistance. In this case, a new B-D ticket would have to be sold.

Do you already possess your ticket? If so, what is the origin, destination, route and ticket type. Once we know the answers to these questions, we will be able to provide a more detailed response.

Thanks,

I haven't got the ticket yet but was planning to get an off peak return from London Euston to Porthmadog via Birmingham, with a YP for £44.40. From your last post perhaps the best option would be to by a single from Shrewsbury to Blaenau Ffestiniog for £13.20 on the way up?

Thanks,
