Tomorrow I am going to Manchester from Uttoxeter and I was wondering if a Uttoxeter to Manchester ticket is valid coming back through Sheffield? I know its not the most direct way but is a line I haven't been on.

Cheers to anyone who knows.

I don't think it is, no.

For starters, the route is not accepted by National Rail Enquieries which (under certain interpretations of the new routing guide wording) is enough to bar it.

Worked through version:
The shortest route is via Stoke and Macclesfield.

Uttoxeter is associated with Derby Group and Stoke-on-Trent as its two routing points. Derby fails the fares test. Therefore the only valid routing point is Stoke, which has only one mapped route to Manchester, which is map MH. This again only permits the route via Stoke and Macclesfield.

According to the NRE website, Uttoxeter - New Mills Central return is valid via Stockport or via Sheffield and Derby.

(NRE gives itineraries both ways e.g.

18:14 New Mills Central [NMC] - Sheffield [SHF] 19:06
19:23 Sheffield [SHF] Derby [DBY] 19:51
20:42 Derby [DBY] Uttoxeter [UTT] 21:05

You would have to get the Northern stopper from Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield which calls at New Mills Central, where you would 'change' from the outward to the return portion (you can stay on the train).

What time are you leaving Uttoxeter?

I have to be in Manchester before 9 so I had better go through Stoke-on-Trent.

I went via Sheffield in the end on the way back, I asked the station staff at Manchester Piccadilly and they said that there was no reason why it shouldn't be valid through Sheffield but they did say they didn't see why anyone would want to do that journey.
