I would just like to confirm that I've correctly interpreted the validity code 2V. An off peak return from Bournville to Darlington would be valid from New Street for the outward journey on the 0930 train wouldn't it? As this is an off peak ticket allowing a break of journey starting at New Street is acceptable according to section 1.5.2.2 of the ticketing guide.

Below is from BR Fares detailing the 2V restrictions.
Restriction Code: 2V

Applicable days

Mondays to Fridays

OUTWARD AND RETURN TRAVEL

Not valid on trains scheduled
to depart after 04:29 and
before 09:30.

Ticket Class: STANDARD
Ticket Name: OFF-PEAK
Single/Return: SINGLE
Out Validity:-
Day - DATE ON TICKET
Time - SEE BELOW
Break of Jrny: (OUT) YES

Many thanks

As you've suggested, although the ticket would be valid on the 0930 from Birmingham, it wouldn't be valid from Bournville before then, so you'd need a different ticket to get to Birmingham.

This is called "splitting tickets". If you're going to split tickets, take a look at TrainSplit.com for some ideas to split at some other points as well. It will probably save you some money.
