Beeston Castle on the other hand ......

[Yes, I realise that's on the Crewe-Chester line :) ]

Also Waverton between Crewe and Chester, Holywell Parkway (Junction as was) on North Wales Coast.

On WCML further north Garstang, Galgate, Hest Bank, Milnthorpe, Tebay and Shap.

On main Transpennine route Diggle.

Newtonhill and Cove Bay, just South of Aberdeen either side of Portlethen. Probably as part of the Aberdeen Crossrail scheme.

There was a study into reopening the latter, but it relies heavily on the assumption that figures produced for a study in one place are appropriate in another.

For instance, it assumes that existing or proposed 'bus lanes will protect 'buses from the effects of increased congestion. There are no 'bus lanes on Vicars Cross Road in Chester.

That said, most of the ongoing cost in the proposal is based on the assumption that 10% of Crewe-Chester travellers will desert the railway if the train stopped en route, and that every train will do so, even though the proposed platform isn't as long as the Virgin ones.

All in all, I know as much about how useful a station in Tiverton would be as I did before I looked at the report.
Also Waverton between Crewe and Chester, Holywell Parkway (Junction as was) on North Wales Coast.
Brown Heath Road in Waverton is 23 minutes from Chester railway station by 'bus, with an hourly service in each direction during the day, half-hourly to Foregate Street. I'm not sure a train would add much, particularly given how far the railway is from the village centre.

I can't find any evidence of a campaign to reopen Holywell station. It's a couple of miles and a big hill away from the town centre, so maybe there isn't the interest. Saltney, on the other hand...

In Shropshire: Bayston Hill (5000), Baschurch (3000).

These large villages don't have a station, yet Yorton and Prees do. Genius.

Holywell has a population of 6000.

The Holywell Junction - Town branch doesn't appear to have been built on at all, so maybe reopen it using a Parry People Mover !!!

BTW, does anyone know what the gradient was on the branch ? It must have been pretty steep

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
I'm sure we've had a thread like this before. On the same line: Tuxford, Bawtry, Rossington. But the bus services are OK, so would it be worth spending a fortune building new stations and passing loops so the pathing on the main line isn't disrupted? Probably not.

Where commercially run bus services are provided, these can be taken as replacements for the train, provided that they would meet the main passenger flow.

However, as a result of the cutbacks in local authority spending, many rural "tendered" routes are (or have been) looked at with the eye of an accountant and "Armageddon" will soon be visited upon many of these routes. There has already been a thread published on the light rail/Metro/other transport sub-forum concerning Cheshire East council and a certain "list" of tendered bus routes.

most obvious to me would be Hemsworth on the Leeds-Doncaster line, and then Rossington, Bawtry, Ranskill and Tuxford on the ECML south of Doncaster.

Were Doncaster-Peterborough to be quadrupled to allow slower services to run, I'd hope to see stations at Werrington, Essendine, Corby Glen, Sutton on Trent, Tuxford, Ranskill, Bawtry and Rossington, served on an extended FCC LKX-DON service.

1 in 27, apparently. Probably a bit much for a People Mover, even if you could work out why someone would want to take a train from Holywell to Greenfield.
