The rail operator has decided to coincide the introduction of the new timetable next week with the scrapping of cheap walk-on fares on early morning services out of London on the West Coast Main Line.

It will see some fare trebling as a result, while others will more than double.

The increases are in addition to the annual fare rises which come into force in January.

The rail operator has decided to coincide the introduction of the new timetable next week with the scrapping of cheap walk-on fares on early morning services out of London on the West Coast Main Line.

It will see some fare trebling as a result, while others will more than double.

The increases are in addition to the annual fare rises which come into force in January.

....

But Virgin Trains said the move was justified given that the upgraded West Coast Main Line will mean journey times will be shorter.

"The trains have not been full in the past, but they will now because it will be a much more attractive service," said a Virgin spokesman.

"These will now be business services because the trains will offer much faster journey times.

"We have to set our fare levels at a point which they are attractive but also cover our costs.

"We are competing against the airlines. We now have 75 per cent of the market on the London to Manchester route compared to 25 per cent which is still retained by the airlines.

"Four years ago we only carried a third of passengers. We are not going to apologise for these fares.

"The test will be whether we continue to grow at the expense of the airlines."

This is a repeat of an article in the London Evening Standard a couple of nights ago.
Some commentators have raised questions as to its accuracy pointing out that cheap walk on fares have never been available on early morning services. According to NRM 02 it is only to Glasgow that restrictions have been tightened and then not that much.

Probably sourced their info from people on here :) Wasn't their last article from RUK?

Last article was perfectly accurate (partly researched by myself) but this one doesn't seem to relate to any change I can see. Checking NFM01 and NFM02, I can find no changes to conditions at all, as peak travel out of London was never allowed previously anyway.

Yeah, I also heard that the restrictions on some off-peak journeys were some front and the train fares are three times more expensive!
