In one of the disused Piccadilly Line passages at South Kensington, "VP 42" is displayed on the wall (https://media.subbrit.org.uk/10295/1552674771-southkensington11.jpg). I've noticed a similar code is/was on the exterior of the Carlton Square vent shaft, reading "VP 34."

What does the "VP" stand for, and what are these codes used for?

Ventilation Plant.

Quite simply they allow LU to refer to civil assets. There are other abbreviations like TL for tunnel, CW for covered way, CP for cross passage, RW for retaining wall, PS for pump site, et cetera.
