Heads up for those interested, RTT currently showing weekend of 28th October 2017 for diversions via Spalding and Lincoln. Looks like more services than previous years.

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/SPA/2017/10/28/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt

And it probably explains why I saw VTEC driver in the cab of a 153 on the first service to Lincoln from Peterborough a few weeks ago.

This is what Network Rail Enquiries 'Future Engineering Works' has to say:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/servi...tAndFuture.aspx?TravelDate=28/10/2017&TOC=ht#
No trains at Grantham all day on Saturday 28 and until 12:00 on Sunday 29 October

Engineering work is taking place in the Grantham area, closing all lines through the station.

Trains will not call at Grantham.

East Midlands Trains services between Nottingham and Skegness will be diverted via an alternative route and call additionally at Bottesford as required. Buses will run between Grantham and Bottesford.

Trains between Liverpool Lime Street and Norwich will operate as two separate services. One between Liverpool Lime Street and Nottingham and one between Nottingham and Norwich. Trains between Nottingham and Norwich will be diverted via an alternative route, not calling at Grantham.

Trains between Nottingham and Grantham will be replaced by buses between Bottesford and Grantham.

Grand Central, Hull Trains and Virgin Trains East Coast will run an reduced service. Tains will be retimed and diverted via an alternative route, extending journey times by up to 70 minutes.

Some services from Edinburgh / Newcastle will be amended to terminate at York, Doncaster or Newark North Gate.

Buses will run between Newark North Gate and Peterborough, calling at Grantham.

Does this mean some services will divert via the GNGE line to re-join the EC line at Werrington Junction?

All VTEC, Grand Central and Hull Train services will use Werrington Junction to access the Joint Line.

There are also diversions the following weekend 4/5 November.

But as usual, presumably none of the diverted trains will stop at Lincoln, so passengers from Lincoln will have the joy of a train to Newark NG, bus to Peterborough, which probably won't connect with the train from Lincoln, then train Peterborough to London.

Or take the dog box to Peterborough. (During the few hours it operates)

When I was a lad in BR days they used to stop at Lincoln where passengers for Newark and Retford could take a train to those places. However as it was less fragmented back then it was probably easier to make that happen.

The more bizarre diversion was the East Anglia - North West service via Sleaford.

Grantham people were encouraged to travel via Nottingham. Buses still ran but all stations had rail alternatives. (Although guess they do now if the head towards MML)

Until the Spalding-March line closed, the most logical way to travel from Manchester to East Anglia was via the joint line between March and Lincoln; I am too young to remember the M&GNJR. Closing the March-Spalding and Spalding-Grimsby lines (both post Beeching) were some of the worst closures in the later BR era, and this has contributed to Lincolnshire's relative isolation.
