Looking at first class from Waterloo to Weymouth off peak on South West Trains. Is the service any more than a separate compartment?

By 'seperate compartment' I'll assume you're referring to first class compartments with a side corridor through the carriage. The 442s which operated Waterloo-Weymouth trains had first class compartments but they were withdrawn in February 2007

So, for your first class ticket you get a seat that reclines (just a bit), a powerpoint to plug your laptop in, individual reading lights and bit of peace and quiet. Remember though that on 444s (the units that operate Waterloo-Weymouth services) the first class section's in the middle of the train so you may be disturbed by people walking through. Finally, there's no free food or drink included.

Save your money and go standard class.

Not always. On 444s first class is two-thirds of the end coach of each unit and usually, but not always, at the London end. The only time people frequently walk through first class is when two units are coupled together on peak journeys and you're in the middle of the 10-coach train.

I often travel first class on these units between Waterloo and Poole, frequently using £19 first advance tickets. Good value for a 2-hour journey, even if no complimentary refeshments.

There a lot of seats in first class that are just on their own, so you wouldn't have to share your space with anyone...

I'd say it's only worth if you can get the advance fare. Having used 1st class on the route before it is definitely more comfortable with a noticeable amount of extra room. It wasn't noisy from people walking through as far as I can remember.

I have been on a 450 1st class from Bournemouth to London which was worse than having a bank of seats to yourself in standard!
