Steam railway is to run on diesel

"A steam railway, which was forced to close for more than a year amid debts of £1m, is to begin services again - with diesel engines.

The Weardale Railway went into voluntary administration in January 2005, a few months after opening.

Fewer than expected passengers and contractual problems forced the £5m project to cease operations.

But services are to resume in the summer after a rescue deal involving a London-based community transport group.

London-based community transport group ECT has take over the railway's operations following an agreement by creditors to take 25p for every £1 they were owed.

But bosses say steam trains are unlikely to return to the five-mile stretch of restored track between Wolsingham and Stanhope in County Durham, until 2007. Weardale Railways Managing Director Steve Raine said: "We've got lots of exciting plans for the 2007 season, including regular steam operation, introduction of a luxury wine and dine train, and provision of improved facilities at Wolsingham Station."

The railway will continue to be mainly operated and maintained by volunteer members of the Weardale Railway Trust in an effort to minimise wage costs so that income can be to invested in development. "

I think a forum trip will be required this Summer !!!

Currently, the only operational stock they have is a Class 141 unit. 37275 should be moving there in the coming months.
