Got on a Circle Line train at King's X the other Sunday to go to Paddington. We waited a while at Edgware Rd for the drivers to change, then our service was announced as a Circle Line train via High St Ken and Victoria. We arrived at Paddington on the District Line platforms. I thought all westbound trains carried on to Hammersmith, or is it common for them to rejoin the circle for operational reasons?

This indeed happened on 6 October as H&C trains were terminating at Aldgate, due to planned engineering work.
The circular service should operate again (wholly S7?) on 11/12 Jan.

Ah, thanks. Glad I wasn't imagining things! So that was possibly the last time that C stock would work the original circle.

It occasionally happens going the other way too, where a Circle Line train has come up from High St Ken to Edgware Road, then continued in service eastbound...

It's not uncommon, in this case for engineering works, in other cases for late running. If a train has missed it's "Outer Rail" slot having come up from Hammersmith depot late, it can be put into Moorgate bay roads, and depart on the westbound to arrive at Edgware Road right time for it's "Inner Rail" working (to Hammersmith, via Victoria). Therefore between Moorgate and Edgware Road you have an 'old style' inner rail Circle.
