From NXEA...

This Tuesday will see the grand opening of the Westfield Shopping
Centre at Stratford. This shopping centre is Europe's largest urban
shopping mall and has hundreds of shops and restaurants. There
is also a multi screen cinema, hotels and a casino. The centre will be
open from 0800 with the shops starting to trade at 1000. There will be
an official opening by Nicole Scherzinger at around 1130 and there is
expected to be between 150,000 and 200,000 people through the centre
on the opening day. It is also estimated that the same number will want
to go to the centre on the following Saturday as well.
All of this poses a significant challenge for us and we have spent a lot of time and effort developing a train plan
that will hopefully cope with the number of passengers we could experience. We are planning that Metro services
to and from Liverpool Street in the AM and PM peaks that are normally empty will be used as passenger trains to/
from Stratford. This will enable us to create a queuing system at Liverpool Street in the area around platforms 11
to 18. In the off peak periods we are keeping trains as long as possible. There are also additional services on the
West Anglia route towards Tottenham Hale from Stratford.
At Stratford station itself we will be deploying a number of additional staff around the platforms and subways to
ensure the safe passage of passengers heading to the shops and our usual flows of commuters. These people
will be strategically located to ensure they are able to react swiftly to the ever changing situation as trains arrive
and the events in the shopping centre finish. Whilst there are no special events planned for the first Saturday of
operation the shopping centre is expecting as many people to attend as the first day.
One opportunity this event does provide is to test some of
our plans for the Olympic Games period. The idea of running
empty trains as passenger services will also happen during
the games and this will be supplemented by longer and
additional trains to deal with the late events at the Olympic
park. Next Tuesday will also provide many outside agencies
the opportunity to monitor how the station, our train service
and our response to incidents will cope under the pressure
similar to the Olympics. It is therefore an opportunity for us
to demonstrate the high level of train service performance
and Customer Service which we deliver each and every day.

Also this from c2c

For the opening of the Westfield Shopping Centre at Stratford,
c2c will be operating a normal weekday service between West Ham (change for Jubilee Line to Stratford) and all stations. The evening Liverpool Street - Grays services will also operate as normal, calling at Stratford, and many c2c services will be strengthened to eight carriages.
An additional train will operate on Tuesday to Friday evenings this week:

21.17 Liverpool Street to Southend Central calling at Stratford 21.24, Barking 21.37, Upminster 21.48, Laindon 21.56, Basildon 21.59, Pitsea 22.03, Benfleet 22.07, Leigh-on-Sea 22.11, Chalkwell 22.14, Westcliff 22.17 and arriving into Southend Central at 22.19.

Not absolutely certain, but I presume this is normally an ECS working. (Without checking the timetable, my recollection is that there are two c2c passenger services out of Liverpool St - at 2035 and 2135 - but three evening ones - and also one early morning one - into Liv St.)

Just so as not to miss anyone out...

Southeastern said:
Southeastern today announced that it will be running extra services for the opening of Westfield Stratford City on Tuesday 13 September and Saturday 17 September. With over 150,000 visitors expected for the opening day of the new shopping centre, Southeastern is taking the opportunity to test plans for the Paralympics next year.

The extra services will see an additional 2 trains an hour running between St Pancras International and Ebbsfleet International via Stratford International from approximately 07.00 until 23.00. The extra services will also use the International platforms at Stratford International station. Working with Network Rail and High Speed 1, Southeastern will also be able to test queuing and other operational systems at the stations planned for the Olympics.

Southeastern spokesman said, “We have been working closely with Westfield to understand what the numbers of passengers will be on our service for the opening. We know from the opening of Westfield London that nearly 250,000 shoppers attended. We are taking advantage of this increase in numbers to test our plans for 2012.”

Following the opening of Westfield Stratford City, the current bus connection between the International and the Regional centre will cease to run from the 20 September, with a walking route through the shopping centre available to all passengers as well as the DLR extension also in operation.

Thanks for this. We were wondering why the Modifications to Unit Diagrams for this week came to us the week before last & why they were so complicated. We thought it was just a trial run for t'Olympics. Good that you have to find these things out from a forum, not your management!

How does Westfield Stratford compare with Westfield White City/Shepherds Bush? I'm sure my wife would like to know.

Apologies for the non rail related question.

Was there significant overcrowding on trains or stations as a result of the opening of the shopping centre?

Is that exactly how it's described, suggesting there are bigger suburban shopping centres? I actually thought it was the biggest in Europe full stop.

Still, from people who were crazy enough to go along (and I'd been invited to the press launch for some odd reason, but opted to stay home) it was packed.

The question is; were these people spending. I've been to Westfield in west London a few times and never bought a single thing (did eat there once though) so lots of people browsing to kill time isn't probably a good thing!

It has no expensive designer village like Shepherds Bush. Apparently it struggled to get some who did take up space to move from the West End & to a place with an E postcode!!

Another difference is the likes of McDonalds can be found at Stratford City.

Don't think Westfield London (W12) has Primark, TK Maxx, Argos etc... so it's a little bit less high-end in that respect unsurprisingly!

Should imagine just a single handbag in one of W12s exclusive shops is worth the entire stock of tat in a TK Maxx store ;)

They said on the radio that Primark was the busiest store.

I am amazed so many people went to a shopping centre that pretty much only has the same shops as anywhere else. Of course, that's the same wherever you go now - even going to mainland Europe will still have loads of the same stores.

As a result, I really can't get that excited about ANY shopping mall now. In fact, the lack of choice just makes me feel happier to shop online!

Of course, I'll venture down to look at the place one day but only when everything has calmed down.

No longer here
Actually Westfield Shepherd's Bush is a favourite of mine. It has a lot of high end stores you don't mind elsewhere. It also has a great food court, which is also affordable. It's got great rail connections too, which is always a bonus.

I'm not someone to go shopping for the sake of it, but I do try to enjoy it when I set a day aside for it!

I go for similar reasons. The food court is excellent, and there are plenty of (not too busy shops) all in one place.

I will go to Westfield Stratford the next time I'm in London to see what it's like. I'm not bothered about any "high-end" shops - I'm bothered about the food court! I am slightly suspicious, though, that it is only the "UK's biggest shopping centre" because of the gigantic casino on the top floor. I will, of course, ignore it, but I do find it slightly offensive that Westfield decide to put a casino in the most deprived areas of London, but didn't put one in a very affluent area of London.

That's where they'll make the money though....

Yeah, have you ever seen an empty bookies in a deprived area?

I hope Westfield has planned ahead by putting a cash converters, pawn shop and other places to get money quickly by the escalators up to the casino! Or, better still, INSIDE the casino!
