What’s the point of this movement?

Just been on a Northenr train passing Romiley and saw a TPE train going the other way. No engineering works to Stockport so decided to look it up. It appears there was an ECS movement from Manchester to Chinley East junction and back again. But for what reason?? Photos attached

Don’t sign the traction or the route, but there are numerous reasons for train movements.
Proving the route/inspecting the line, route learning for signallers, drivers etc. train testing, as well as any other particular reason the signaller or train company may need, like clearing platforms and juggling trains and sets around.
Happy to be corrected though.

To allow crew to refresh / learn the route for the upcoming closure at Stockport.

I'm open to correction, but I believe the small amount of Manchester TPE drivers who sign Sheffield don't sign the diversion via Romiley. With the amount of time Stockport is going to be blocked this year, that is likely going to be an issue that TPE will want to remedy.

I'm fairly sure that's correct.

Romiley route learner for Manchester Drivers. Runs to the junction at Chinley and turns back.

I've always found it odd that TPE being a local operator doesn't have many staff that sign via Romiley yet EMR who are from out the area does. With more TPE staff signing Romiley now it might mean an end to the Manchester-Sheffield via Huddersfield whenever engineering works are on.

They have all struggled since the land slip to keep the retention up. They will still go via the Hope Valley if a TRU block require it
