A train service on boxing day would be great for getting to and from the football matches that take place that day.

In the past they used to ensure that everyone played their nearest side, or as close as possible to that. Now it seems anyone within 100 or so miles is fair game, so it is almost like any other fixture programme.

I would not want to see trains on Christmas Day though, I still like the idea that there is at least one shut down day in the calendar.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day are the only 2 guaranteed days a year most rail staff get off. People have managed to get to shops and football matches on boxing day for years without them running just fine so why change it now?
I live a hundred miles from my family so if I had to work boxing day it would ruin christmas for me. It will only ever work if its on a volunteer system and people arnt forced into it.

as I mentioned in another thread the other day, drivers will actually go in and warm up the engines. Must be a nice pay packet from that

yes,ive been to work loads of times on xmas day and boxing day for frost dutys to run up the locos as 1-diesels dont tend to have anti freeze in the cooling systems as its corrosive, and 2-a lot of newer locos like 66s have to be run up every 24 hours, cold or not. as for services over the festive period,
c2c did,a few years ago,run a boxing day service, but was not used in great numbers, though it did finish rather early in the afternoon, and this was withdawn. out here in france, where i now live, there is no such thing as boxing day, with most of the shops open and even the post delivered.:D

just to add that most rail companys only pay xmas and bank holidays as normal time, not even any days off in lieu. gone are the days of tripple time and a day off in lieu!
