What (If Any) Stock Is Currently Unused?

A question I was wondering about. Is there any rolling stock suitable for passenger use in the UK that's not currently being used?

I'm guessing TOCs wouldn't pay to lease anything they don't need, so this is most likely to include: stock owned by any ROSCO that's not currently being leased, or possibly anything owned outright by a TOC that they don't use.

EDIT: I'm asking about stock that is currently unused and has no planned use. Not stock that has recently been built and is simply waiting to enter service.

701s? Weren't they only built a few years ago? Surely they haven't already become disused?

But yes, that kind of information is what I was looking for, although ideally with a rough idea of numbers. The point is to get an idea of what kind of stock is available that could in principle be used to improve services (barring practical issues like £££).

OK so I should clarify that I'm asking about stock that is actually unused because it's surplus to current requirements/what DT/TOCs are currently willing to pay to lease stock, NOT stock that's simply waiting to enter service.

Perhaps the question should be ‘off-lease’ stock?

No - all but five of them have never been used in the first place, despite having been built more than five years ago.

EDIT - actually seven, but one hasn't been seen since February and another has operated in passnger service on one single day in October.

Also some 466s. Around 26 465s are out of service displaced by 707s

Also two fleets of 769s (ex 319s). The GWR fleet of AC/DC/diesel units which has never been used since conversion, and the ex TfW fleet (unless some or all of those have been scrapped since withdrawal).

Are the 156’s at Ely still fit for use?
No, not really unless anyone wishes to pay for the overhauls and corrosion repairs that they require.

There’s a handful of 180s at Ely though. And a number of non compliant 153s in store in Long Marston.

Apart from the TPE Mk5 sets (heavily destined for Chiltern as long as the DfT signs it off), I don’t think there’s really any other fleets almost entirely off lease than outlined in this thread already.

Surely the ex GWR 769 are worth a punt on them considering the work done on them they could last 10 years?
They looked almost ready to enter service with gwr.

I looked around the forum without success on this, but surely the 68 and Mk5 sets would have been a slam dunk for XC capacity problems?

Driver training aside (which, for XC, appears to be an insuperable barrier to be fair) would having a loco + rake service not have enabled a replacement for thr HSTs to enable the Viyagers to double up more?

Your original unedited question was concerning stock not presently used.

Crosscountry are receiving additional Voyagers, which are compatible with the existing fleet and functionally comparable for crew familiarisation, scheduling and maintenance purposes.

No one’s mentioned the 323s (9?) that didn’t transfer to Northern and which are now stored.

There has been a gap between the nine scrapped and the six which are still at the Railnet depot at Willesden. Additionally Royal Mail said that they were still for sale, suggesting they might not move just yet.
Why did 325s ever get mentioned in this thread. They’re not exactly ‘suitable for passenger use’ are they?

Yes, but the original question did include a specific requirement for passenger use. People often don’t seem to read the actual question…
It wasn’t me that started the discussion about 325s - I merely stated that they were not all scrapped!

Plus they were supposed to be convertible for passenger use IIRC?

You can have passengers in a 325. They'd just have to bring their own chairs.
