Hi, I have been invited to a recruitment event in Glasgow next week and I'm just wondering what to wear? Do you wear smart clothes like you would for an interview or just casual?

Also, I have read on here about the tests you do on the day but can anyone tell me what 'train questions' you're asked? Is it the type you got at school like 'a train leaves the station at 14.35pm...it stops off at 5 stations...the journey takes 5 hours in total...what time does the train arrive at it's destination' etc...?

Thanks

Definately, wear smart wear. I went to an recruitment event recently, it was an interview with no test but that was for a driver position.

Clown costume.

But more seriously. Start with a suit matched with a more casual shirt. So rather than a plain white or similar shirt pick either a colourful or striped one. Therefore you are covered for both. If it turns out to be a suit affair you are in a suit, if it turns out to be more casual jacket and tie off, top button undone and boom, neat casual.

I've been invited to this as well and also wondering what to wear. I think a suit is a safe option :) rather overdressed than underdressed!

Wear a suit or at least shirt/smart trousers/shoes/tie. Remember it's far better to be overdressed than underdressed and if you do feel really out of place you can always take of the tie or suit jacket. It's hard to make a t-shirt and jeans smarter ;)

Unless its changed since I left, this is how the day goes.

When you turn up, you'll be shown to the kitchen where you can relax and meet the other candidates, and someone from recruitment will come and explain how the day works.

Normally the first stage is written tests. You should get two, one tests your ability to do maths and count money and so on, the other tests your english skills and your ability to understand rules. The papers are marked straight away, and those who fail get sent home then and there, but those that pass go through to the next stage, the group exercise.

Normally, you are all put in a room together, and you get given a story. It's usually something along the lines of your boat has sunk and you have to pick which objects are the most important to survive, or the world is about to end and you have to choose from a list which people you would save. You get given a few minutes to make your own rankings, then you all discuss it as a group and try to reach a consensus together. It's a good way of seeing which people are too quiet or timid to get their voice heard, and which people are too dominant. Communication and team working skills are vital so thats what you really need to demonstrate.

Those who pass that, get to go for an interview.
( Hope this helps

Hi 1006, I still haven't heard anything and I replied on the Friday afternoon. Looks like I left it too late considering you all replied on the same day! :(

I got the email last Thursday and replied the same day. Never heard anything so spaces must have filled up very quickly.

I didn't get an invite either so I went back to check how long it took me to reply, a grand total of 4 hours. Usually I'd say I'm disappointed but unless I randomly had a Thursday off and was watching my email account like a hawk OR was unemployed OR farting about in work doing personal stuff instead of my job then there is no way I could have replied quicker. It's a very strange/unprofessional way of doing a recruitment process, my current boss had me and another member of staff look at every application for casual bar staff. There was over 1500 applications took ages but every cv was looked at and those that passed got invited to an interview, yes it was a bit of a meat market on interview day but at least it gave everybody a realistic chance. Good luck to those that got through.
