As I hate flying and I have always wanted to go to Iceland I have looked into the ferry before.

Its not ridiculously expensive although there are words of warning about spending 2 days on the North Sea, a very rough North Sea :s

Best miss lunch lol

If you want to book you have to do it through an agent called Scantours who are the operators UK agent http://www.scantours.co.uk

I really want to do it, just not too keen on the North Sea :)

As far as I can tell it calls at Scrabster (near Thurso) and the Faroe Isles en-route from Norway to Iceland.
Aye, it sure does...Here's their network map: 8)
Route-DK.jpg

One change in Tórshavn, and you're there! 8)

...And seeing that the Færøyene lies exactly half-way between Scotland and Iceland, and provides an ideal "stepping stone" of sorts...I now have the feeling that a Transatlantic Transrapid could actually be built in a cost-effective and do-able manner...;)<D

I haven't worked [the fares] out yet
Well...After taking a look at This PDF price list, their pricing structure seems perfectly clear to me...Three tariff levels, a bunch of optional extras, and a reminder that when going from Hanstholm to Seyðisfjörður or vice-versa, ye have a 22-hour changeover in Tórshavn and accommodation is not included!
They've provided some examples to show ye how the fare goes together in the PDF...And if I can understand them, then I'm certain that ye can make sense of them too! 8)
(If only our new and "simplified" railway ticketing system was as simple as Smyril Line's fares...:D;))

Anyhow...This thread is beginning to seed a very strong yearning for certain cold and frost-bitten lands within my heart once more! Does anyone fancy joining me on a cruise this Yule? 8)
(Bring a decent jacket, several cardigans, and leave the Bermuda shorts at home...Ye won't be needing those where I'm going!:lol:<D)

but everything has got so boring in the UK now (IMHO), and there is much less traffic.

Oooh, disagree with you there. Just because its 66 after 66, with the odd 60 thrown in, doesn't mean it's boring. I've never got bored of photography, which is why the North East caters for my needs. Freight, and lots of it. Although I'd consider a trip to Bulgaria in the future when the 87s are all over there. :)

Unfortunately I'm not fluent in Norwegian :p

I'm quite tempted to work out the cost/times of a round trip (train to Thurso, Ferry over to Iceland and either flying back or ferry back to Newcastle via Bergen) to see if would be feasible to do. Then I'll remind myself that I have more important things to be spending money on at the moment

ok, seriously, someones gotta ask: so where the hell does the train go to???

It runs to Malaysia, Singapore is at the end of the SE Asian Peninsula so there is only one way to go and thats NW into Malaysia and onwards to Thailand-you could make it all the way back to the UK by rail if you had the time. Singapore also has a metro system (SMRT) consisting of three lines and plenty of stations, and on my last visit I completed the whole network! I have done the Kuala Lumpur to Singapore train trip and will one day get round to uploading the pictures, plus the ones of the Singapore Metro.

Iceland is well worth a visit,

Our sea voyage was pretty smooth, but it was the QE2 rather than a traditional ferry.;)

I've been to Australia a couple of times, because half of my family live out there :)

Also, went to Iceland in the summer with 37 others from my school, it was an awesome trip. I have 30 of the 1200 or so photos i took in this set on flickr

Tbh, i can't actually remember most of the places i've been, my memory's that bad. (tbh, i can't remember very much :???:)

Many years ago I was the same, always looking for something to chase and photograph - preferably down a branch line and if it was the only train of the week even better! I am currently very slowly scanning my photograph collection and it is sobering to come across all the stuff that has gone, not least the different loco types.

I first went abroad in 1996 and gradually got more and more "into" it to the extent that I can get far more enthused about planning a trip over there than chasing the seemingly ever diminishing stuff in this country. Perhaps it is an age thing and a slight element of "been there, done that" which sends me whizzing across the channel at every opportunity these days.

Urm...

Speyer, Rheinland-Pfalz. Lovely place.
Wensleydale (Askrigg). Parents cottage up there. Spend most christmas' there.
Dalyan, Turkey. Lots of friends live there, so spend a lot of summer there.
Malton, East Yorkshire. Lots of good friends there.
Scotland! All over Scotland! Do roughly 4 - 6 expeditions a year, with 2 -3 rambles over a weekend or so for good measure. I unfortunately always seem to be spend an unfair proportion of my time at Crianlarich rail station. It's really boring...

Well, for those who can't speak Norsk at all, I've also managed to dig up an English version. :D:lol::razz:

Ditto, ditto...After all, Yule is only three weeks away now!

I dunno, to be honest...But I DO know that it's a lot better than the south east!<D

Yeah, I found that too. The online catalogue makes things a bit clearer too. If I did do it, I don't think I'd get the ferry back (Seyðisfjörður to Scrabser takes 6 days including a 3.5 day stop on the Faroe isles while the ferry goes to Denmark) unless I was doing one of the cruises.

Oh yes! Suffering withdrawal symptoms from noisy orange diesels, we haven’t been since October last year. Looking forwards to 1805 again, though, being an eternal pessimist I won't really believe it until it is tied onto the front of our train.

See you there then!
