We try and have discussions at work most days and this one has lasted days and we have had in- depth discussions,so now you try and decide.

Are there more Traffic Cones, Wheelie Bins (any) or street signs in England :)

There's probably two wheelie bins per house (I think they have four in Barnsley, depends on the council of course).

But I think there are probably more pot-holes! (or maybe that's just my street)

They're far from universal though.

My home council, North Dorset, was one of the first in the country to provide kerbside recycling in 1995. We were given a single medium-sized green plastic crate with no lid. 18 years on and we're still using them.

I'd say there are more street signs, quite a few roads will have 2-3 signs per road, especially if another road leads onto it.

As for wheelie bins, in my house we have 4, 2 non-recyclables and 2 garden waste. Reason was because when we had the system changed last we were given two of everything! We found out the reason why a few months ago, the previous owners had applied for two lots of bins the first time round around 11 years ago so it's still on the database. The council very kindly let us keep the bins and just as much they are needed as well!

Street signs, especially after new housing developments seem to generate "AA" style black and yellow notices. It may be because I don't often drive on motorways, or that the authorities round here skimp on road maintenance, but I don't often see cones these days.

My local district council embarked on the green box for kerbside recycling alongside normal landfill black bags...until they went down the route of wheelie bins. Now we have two (or three if you're in the garden waste scheme) per house; or respective bags for flats/apartments.

The irony of changing to wheelie bins meant if you put that out the recycling box on the day they emptied the recycling bin they took your box away as well!

As for garden waste. When the collection scheme was introduced participants paid a "one-off" fee for their bin. After a couple of years though the council changed their policy and will only collect bins that have been registered - which incurs a registration fee per year.

Back to the OP question though. Even though some authorities have suggested removing unnecessary road signs i still think they are the most prolific, even more than traffic cones.

Many houses in Salford have blue bins for recyclable (paper) waste, brown bins for recyclable (bottle) waste, black (with pink lid) bins for garden (green - no soil) waste and black for general household waste, each is emptied every other week. The result is that, as I only have the black bin, my waste is taken away once every two weeks.

I would therefore suggest that there are many more bins than street signs in Salford, don't tend to see many traffic cones either.

I can't speak for England, but in my part of Scotland I would go for the Wheelie Bins which are fast becoming a hazard especially on narrow pavements :p

One thing to bear in mind - does street signs include the ones showing the names of roads?

That's why I was guessing at two per house on average, but citing a place where I know that they have four (as there are bound to be some places with just one bin still)

We just have a couple of bags so people can put it out the night before and have it spread across the road by foxes :)
