Just curious, due to recent posts about Northern and Virgin not having enough spare sets to do maintenance/extra servies etc - I was wondering which operator has the most units, and which one has the highest number of spare/reserve sets? Would it be someone like Southern, who never seem short of a train or two?

Pretty sure it is South Eastern with just over 400 units, SWT having around 50 units less.

SWT have a lot of stock. I would quote you figures off wikipedia but they are most probably inaccurate and i would get told off :)

The spare stock at Clapham probably sits there during the day and is used at peak time, especially as on some routes SWT seem to run 4 car trains during the day and 12 car during the peaks.

Having said that, on weekdays SWT's 455s always work in eight-car formation. On weekends they work as single units.

Ah right, I never noticed that.

Where i live it is mainly 450s which i have seen 4 car formations on, althought this could be down to a lot of stock being out of action at the mo.

I am sure it would be between Southern & SouthEastern.

Although this didn't go ahead there was an order for 710 or 750 Class 465s from Network SouthEast if I am correct, so if this did go ahead would a majority of Class 465s be transferred to the South-Central & South-West divisions after privitisation?

Depends how you define "largest" doesn't it? Area? Population of area? People moved per day? Route miles? Total passenger miles per day?

Anyway
Using the occasionally reliable Wikipedia:
Southestern have:
29 6 car units (174 cars)
36 5 car units (180 cars)
249 4 car units (996 cars)
10 3 car units (30 cars)
43 2 car units (86 cars)

gives 367 units (1466 cars)

SWT have
45 5 car units (225 cars)
248 4 car units (992 cars)
32 3 car units (96 cars)
17 2 car units (34 cars)

gives 342 units (1347 cars) (+ 3 locos)

Southern have:
34 2 car units (68 cars)
28 3 car units (84 units)
206 4 car units (824 cars)
17 5 car units (85 cars)
8 8 car units (64 cars)

gives 293 units (1125 cars) (+ 1 loco) (not including the units currently with FCC)

Anyone wish to challenge my maths and/or do FCC, NXEA, FGW, LM or Northern?

SWT currently has: -

11 2-car 158s
22 3-car 159/0s
08 3-car 159/1s
02 3-car 421s (Going in May)
45 5-car 444s
99 4-car 450/0s
28 4-car 450/5s (High Capacity units)
43 4-car 455/7s
28 4-car 455/8s
20 4-car 455/9s
30 4-car 458s
06 2-car 483s (Island Line stock)

Giving a fleet of 342 multiple units. This will drop to 340 when the two 421s are disposed of (supposedly to Heritage lines). There is also still one Class 73 locomotive that SWT is trying to dispose of.

The fleet will rise again depending on the outcome of the 5-car railway for the Windsor lines. Rebuilding the 458 and 460 (Gatwick Express) Junipers to make 5-car units seems the more and more likely outcome for this, but whether the fleet size would increase as a result remains to be seen.

When I said SWT had the most rolling stock I meant the number of trains not number of vehicles as a 6 car train can't run two services at the same time while 2 x 3 car units can.

You sure? I'm positive Northern takes that accolade.

Northern seems to have the most services per annum according to 'Britain's Railway's 2010' with 850,000, and also has the largest geographical spread of any TOC. It also tells you how many units it has but I CBA to work it out!

The more interesting comparison here would be the ratios of diagrammed units per day to units held, i.e. percentage utilisation. Is this readily available information?

It's hardly a surprise that SWT have more than ATW who have more than C2C... (for example)

Bigger geographical spread than Scotrail? As the crow flies, Carlisle or Stranraer to Wick or Thurso (length), and Aberdeen to Mallaig (breadth) are definitely longer than similar Northern pairings.

Anyway, on "spread", surely Aberdeen to Penzance and as far east as Stansted is so much more?

Spread meaning area covered, not longest direct route.

Actually I take your point, but the same books refers the franchise as to being "the country's largest rail network".
