I’ve been meaning to ask this question for sometime.

Why is it there’s no northbound “down” steam tours on the Settle & Carlisle? I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw one.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

The Dalesman runs both ways on the Settle & Carlisle with a locomotive change at Hellifield.

STEAM ON THE SETTLE TO CARLISLE LINE

Choice of two journeys
To Carlisle from York, via the Settle to Carlisle line (steam from Hellifield):
Running Thursdays on 6th and 20th June, 11th July, 8th August, 5th and 19th September, 3rd October 2024. Departing from York, Normanton, Wakefield Westgate, Leeds (Central Station) Keighley and Skipton

To Carlisle from Chester. Outbound journey via the Settle to Carlisle line, (with steam from Hellifield). The return journey is via the West Coast Mainline, (with steam to Carnforth):
Running Tuesdays on 11th June, 2nd and 23rd July, 17th September 2024. Departing from Chester, Frodsham, Warrington Bank Quay, Leyland and Preston.

The Saphos Fellsman also runs both directions on the Settle & Carlisle route.

As do the Railway Touring Co 'Waverley' trains, e.g.

If anything, southbound steam on the WCML over Shap is probably rarer (only recent one I can think of is the Vintage Trains 'Shap Mountaineer'
