I seem to recall that 4001 and 4002 will still continue to be used, However once the train refurbishment is complete. Their use will be reduced and only operate on Matchdays or extra trains are required. However that means 2 trains will be down at peak times to 88 trains.

88 is more than enough to cover for the daily total.

Also need to remember that anything to do with frequencies and headways is down to Nexus, and not DB.

The second point I'd make is that the frequency around the Coast was sacrificed when the Sunderland extension was opened - the idea being that no extra rolling stock would be needed for the new line, as services elsewhere were cut.

That's not strictly true. Until DB Regio took over, there were two or three peak services from St James to Wallsend. It is these that were sacrificed to provide a more uniform peak service through the core. And it is also the case that this solution was that of DB Regio, which NEXUS then agreed to.

But that's just three extra services, which don't cover the whole of the Coast loop. If we're talking about frequencies around the whole of the loop, these haven't been the same since the Sunderland Extension.

No, but I was talking about peak services. The frequency is fine off peak but the peak service is inadequate as a result of the decisions I have discussed.

EM2 Locomotive and Mk2 Coaches anyone? heh

On a more serious point, I really should hope that any new stock is dual voltage and fitted for ERTMS/ETCS that could be implemented with a combined re-signalling of the Metro network. But certain other improvments would also be very helpful, such as getting rid of the single line blocks and potentially opening some additional routes with more rolling stock...

Perhaps one stupid idea would be to nick some D Stock from LUL and fit it with pantos (and of course, re-wire them)...
