Arrived at Southampton Airport Parkway at 12:35 to find no trains going anywhere. Emergency services dealing with an incident. The 12:24 to Manchester turned up at 12:54 with the suggestion that London passengers should change at Basingstoke. The train was composed of two Voyager units, so while full there were seats.
We trundled through the up platform at Eastleigh and then, to my surprise turned left onto the Chandler’s Ford Line. A new route for me and thus the Laverstock loop would get covered as well.
We eventually arrived 70 late at Basingstoke and caught a late running Exeter train into London. It’s rare that nasty situations turn up something that is at least a personally positive so thanks to the Cross Country Driver and guard for keeping up their route knowledge and giving at least one passenger a pleasant surprise.
