Are the problems largely the same as those faced by Northern when the 195s were new?

It seems bizarre that they'd hit the same again, when all these are is 195s with gangways and the windows in a different place (plus some cosmetic changes). Mind you, 197s are 195s with a gangway and different coloured paint, and the Conwy Valley unit disgraced itself last week...

196002 has been seen out a few times this week around Worcester, and has made trips to New Street and Snow Hill.

106 has also been a regular around Worcester recently

I would presume crew training is underway at Worcester for them?

Yes the new sidings are in use & training has started at Worcester, initially shed drivers, instructor drivers & driver managers. Full training of drivers & Conductors will likely start in January as next weeks RMT strike has impacted plans obviously.

I wouldn't be surprised if we have 2 196 diagrams each day for next week as WMR are running out of 170's now (I believe they only have 4 but mark me if I'm wrong)

Not quite - the electrical arrangement is certainly different.

No they've got at least 10 if not more, 6 are staying at Worcester until 196s are introduced on the Hereford line so we can't be down to 4 already :D

Had one tonight on the 18:56 Birmingham to Shrewsbury as far as Wolverhampton and was quite impressed. A slight improvement on the Northern stock, but then they are slightly newer.

Forgot about the ones at Worcester, maybe WMR had more than I though I am surprised that some services had been worked by a single 170 if they have some at Worcester.
The reported issues including cuts from sticking out bins and sharp accessibility ramps clearly can't be too bad as they are fit for service.
May I just confirm that the entire WMR fleet of 170's are making the transfer to EMR or are they holding on to a few for at least the time being?

In time, the full fleet will transfer to EMR. Whilst training on the 196s and introduction takes place at Worcester, they holding onto 6.

Slight improvement is very modest in my opinion. I think the class 196 far eclipses the 195. I’m surprised they were made by the same company

How many class 170s are used on the Herefords a day?

Hard to say now as it is a mixture of 172 and 170 operating the service. I may be wrong, but there seems no pattern to how they are diagrammed. I don't travel every day now, but on the days I do I tend to catch the same services, and what might be 2 x 172 one day could be 172 + 170 the next time I catch it (or just a single 172/0).

I note that there are several paths showing on Realtime trains each weekday that are presumably 196 driver training runs between Worcester and Birmingham, but listed as "runs as required" so hard to predict when they will actually be out running

There is a pattern. There are a pair of 170s that work up and down between Birmingham New Street and Hereford all day. They start on the 05.56 Worcester Shrub Hill to Hereford, and finish with the 22.59 Hereford to Worcester Shrub Hill. Theres then a 170 + 172 combo that works off Worcester Shrub Hill at 06.25 to Birmingham New Street, back to Great Malvern, back to Birmingham New Street then onto Tyseley. They then come back off Tyseley to form the 17.50 to Worcester Shrub Hill, 18 50 to Birmingham New Street and 20.00 to Worcester Shrub Hill. In the event of a unit shortage, then the 170s may be substituted with 172s.
