Just seen (I think) 196002 pull into the west facing bay at Chester at 10:45. A few orange clad staff emerged from it. I took a distant picture from a Merseyrail train that was about to leave but will attach it later if possible.

That time matches up with TFWs 197002 out on training

Second quarter, so April to June.
Many thanks so I take it quite possible then a few maybe around April.
But most likely a certain influx and a vast
Introduction most likely around may 2022.
Like the tfw 230.
However back to above.
Ie sounds right.
Especially as drivers training is so far behind .
Maybe the Hereford 196 could well appear first.
With Shrewsbury being around may 2022 more or less .
Makes sense.
Thank you.

Don't rely on where they might be. We were told that the ex Chiltern 172/1s would be used on the Worcester via Bromsgrove services but I have seen one on the Stourbridge line.

Here's the shot of the new TfW CAF DMU (whatever class number it has).
Not a good picture but it was taken on a mobile at some distance.

002 just passed westbound through P3 at Chester.
WMR (who are getting the 196s) don't serve Chester do they (admittedly test running is sometimes done away from the routes a new fleet will actually work)?

If you mean 197002 then this is the wrong topic - the one you want is, possibly, this one.

Yes. Class 196 are going to be operated by WMR and have very clearly orange ends
Class 197 are for TfW and are admittedly similar to 196, but are red and grey. There will be some overlap between both classes between Shrewsbury and Birmingham, but the clue is definitely in the colour !!!

Has a class 196 coupled to a class 197 in testing to check compatibility? Would seem sensible as it is quite possible a failed 197 may well have a 196 on block behind as their territory overlap.

I don't believe they've been ordered to be compatible, have they?

I don't believe this has happened unless it has been done quietly whilst the 2 classes have been at Donnington - not sure they have been anywhere else together to have done so. Anyway, since when did the railways work in such a joined up way in the modern era?

Very little stock is ordered to be compatible these days. I can imagine the need for the two classes to couple together however is minimal, and in the event of a failed unit WMR or TfW will use another of their respective units for the rescue.

As Long as the stock meets or exceeds the required standards laid down by the dft & network rail etc, it can be down to the operators/ROSCO specifications for the specific customer. For the most part a manufacturer will select a certain coupler but if the customer wishes to make modifications (such as certain pins on the BSI coupler) or changing coupler completely after delivery (171’s) they can do as long as the relevant parties agree. Hence the crazy situation of having 165/166 units working in the same area as 15x units & not being electrically compatible due to different pin arrangement in the coupler electrical box

Thanks! If I happen to pop out on Thursday, as is the expectation, then I'll make sure to check that out. I'm curious more than anything, it would be nice to see some sort of proof that the new trains are in the process of being made ready to take over from the 170s!

Unfortunately I couldn't get out to see today's working, but hopefully I can on Thursday.

I trust you will be posting photos on this thread? If I get out and see it, I'll ensure I share some photos :) Assuming I go for it, I'll aim to be snapping away at Malvern Link I reckon.

Do we know if these are just testing runs or are they taking the opportunity to include driver training.

No driver training yet for the foreseeable future. Training plan & agreement still to be reached due to a couple of ongoing issues.

I know the ORR have approved them a while back, but have any units actually been handed over to WMR?
