Really interesting to read your South Wales travels after I spent 3 days in the area last month. I've done most of the lines but still plenty of shacks and units to clear so a good excuse for another visit next year.

Was going to do a rover this week, but with my 14 day ALR starting in a couple of weeks i abandoned the idea.I had not had any train journeys since my south wales rover (apart from a trip to cleethorpes via the brigg line last saturday ;) )so it was time for a trip to Derbyshire!!!
Derbyshire wayferer - Aug 22nd 2017
first up it was a move to derby on the 1049 sheffield to london St pancras on 22017 (the first unit of my scotland trip :D) just in time to see the class 20s dragging underground stock into derby work(20905 & 20096 at the fromt and 20311 & 20314 at the rear) then it was a ride on a pair of 153s to Matlock bath (153313 was my unit there ) i was going to have an hour at matlock bath but decided against it and waited for the dogboxes to come back from matlock (153385 was my unit back ) i bailed at belper for an hour and was suprised how nice the town was-great shops,a decent chippy and a few decent pubs (real ale festival at the end of september so another trip may be called for ;) ) i returned to derby on 156411 and then it was a move to chesterfield, plan was to do a couple of hours vegging but a 150 turned up on a leeds to nottingham service so it was a quick run to Alfreton on 150135 and a quicker return back to chesterfield on 158843, from there it was a trip to derby on Voayger 220025 (The glasgow to penzance train) and a return to sheffield on the cross country HST service (43301 & 43378)from sheffield it was going to be a run to new mills central and back but i changed my mind as i did'nt fancy a 45 minuite wait at sheffield so it was off home on the 1744 lincoln service to woodhouse. so not too many miles,no units cleared but 2 new stations cleared (belper & Alfreton) and a very nice look round belper-Not bad for £12.60!! next up a couple of days in london for the old oak open day and the 14 day ALR adventure - BRING IT ON :D

Most certainly an enjoyable evening! The beer festival tickles my fancy, it must be said. If you have any further gen I'd love to hear it. Good to know Belper has something worth popping in for, I need the shack there and will need something to do there. Now I know of a decent chippy, I'll be happy

I forgot about the OOC open day and it'll be too late to book time off now :(

Was'nt going to do anything bank holiday monday, but the weather was nice,i was up fairly early and i had a scratch and go ticket in my bag, so it was time to go off on a west yorkshire dayrover :)
West Yorkshire day Rover -Aug 28th 2017
as it was a bank holiday the buses did'nt start til 0830 so it was a walk to woodhouse to catch the 0810 to sheffield-normily worked on a weekday by a pair of pacers today there was a 153/142 combination-i plumped for 153328.then it was aride to Huddersfield on 144020. from there i was supposed to do a move to marsden but 158905 tempted me for a ride to dewsbury on the 1059 leeds stopper, then onwards on 195147 to leeds and my first ride on 142089 for the day to castleford ,after a quick look round castleford (first time i've been since the new bus station opened!) it was off on 144015 up to wakefield kirkgate.I did'nt look round wakefield but had a hour on the platform (got a 66 on frieght so was'nt too bad) next up it was a ride on 180101,i was planning to do it all the way to bradford interchange but i bailed at low moor (winner station number 1 of the day) from there it was a ride on 155341 to halifax and then a quick sprint to catch 150277 to bradford interchange.a quick nip to greggs and a walk to Forster square to catch winner 333009 to Apperley bridge (new station of the day 2 :) ) after half an hour it was back to leeds for another run to castleford on 144008, from there it was time to clear the line to goole and the second tide of the day on 142089 & 153328 (me and 2 others got off at goole and one of those was a enthusiast ;) ) .after half an hour in goole it was time to get 158817 to doncaster and the final move of the day was a 185 to sheffield (for some reason i forgot to log the number in the book !!!) so all in all a great day out-2 stations cleared , a 333 cleared ,a ride on my fave 158 (158905!!!) and i finally got to clear the knootingley to goole line :D

You could probably ask in the TOPS request thread to see if one of the kind people in there can look up that TPE service to fill a gap in your books :)

Sounded like a good way to spend the bank holiday

well,After a few days in london (3 nights at croydthere was on Travelodge ;) ) doing a bit of bashing, and the old oak common open day (i'll not bore you with details but here are some pics from the trip https://www.flickr.com/photos/woodhouse122/albums/72157688461123935 ) it was time to start the 14 day ALR :D
14 Day ALR -Day 1 Monday 4th Sept 2017 first Move of the rover was 377434 from east croydon to brighton, although it was a southern strike day there were not too many distruptions at east croydon.the weather was pretty poor so no walking down to the beach at brighton so it was off to worthing on 313212 and then on 377454 to portsmouth harbour for the boat to Ryde and to finally clear the isle of wight.first move was 483008 to ryde st johns to take a few pics of the 483 units in the sidings (007 was in the sidings next to withdrawn unit 002 raptor and 006 was in the shed being worked on :) )from there it was 483004 to smallbrook Junction to have a ride on the isle of wight steam railway, sadly 41298 was out of service so Hunslet Austerity WD 198 was working .After a look round Haven street and the train story exibition it was back behind the kettle to wooton and then back to smallbrook junction for another ride on 483004 to sandown for a walk to the pier for something to eat ,then back on 004 to shanklin and then straight back to Ryde esplanade for a walk over the pier back to the ferry terminal.Back on the mainland it was 158960 from portsmouth to winchester and then 220027 from winchester to reading for an hours Vegging (a few frieghts and a pair of IEPS) then it was a hst (43198 &43088) to Paddington for a bit of KFC and then the Night Rivera to penzance and my first experience of the refurbished Spleeper coaches (57605 was the loco for tonight) so day one over and i finally got to clear the isle of wight line althiough i did'nt get off at Brading or lake so i may have to return one day ;)

14 Day ALR -Day 2,5th Sept 2017
slept ok on the sleeper but the weather on arrival at penzance was horrid with torrential rain so i gave up on my plan to do a few branch lines in cornwall (I'll be back next year to do a week in the area :) ) after a sausage sandwich and a tea from the cafe i boarded a HST to paddington(43024 & 43127) but by exeter st davids the weather improved so i bailed to get a 143 for a ride up to exmouth and after a walk round another one to Exeter Central for a 159 move to waterloo (had to get off at Salisbury as another pair of 159s were added) got the bus from waterloo to St Pancras for the class 222 back to sheffield (which was absolutley wedged as it was a 4 car set in place of a 7 car set),so day 2 was a bit of a washout but i still managed to clear the exmouth branch (and clear my last 143 for sight ;) )

14 Day ALR -Day 3,6th Sept 2017
Day 3 was a late start with the 0947 service from sheffield to york (220022) for an hours vegging just in time to see leander on it's way from the NRM to Carnforth plus a few freights.after some food it was time to head off for kings cross (91122) and then a quick ride on the Circle line to Liverpool st for a ride to southend Victoria for a look round and a trip on the pier r (Better ride quality on the southend pier train than on the class 483 a few days earlier ;) ) then it was off to southend central for a trip to fenchurch street but i bailed at basildon for another unit then bailed again at upminster and finally at barking for a ride to gospel oak on a class 172 (my last DMU move on the line as it's now closed for the electrification works) then a 378 to stratford for a quick half hours vegging then back to Liverpool street for the 8pm service to Norwich and the first of two nights at Norwich Premier Inn :)

I thought that pier railway had closed?

Sounds like an excellent first 3 days on the ALR. Nice bit of variety, motive power and route wise :)

The Southend pier tailway is still going strong (it was closed but reopened at the end of last year),although only 1 of the 2 train sets were working -the other set,Sir william heygate was out of service and the battery car 1835 was stuck at the pier head station

14 Day ALR -Day 4,7th Sept 2017
Day 4 started at norwich with a tractoor move to great yarmouth,37405 was the loco for the run to yarmouth and the return was 37716. I bailed at brundell for another run to Yarmouth for a look round and another run behind 37716 back to norwich.after a short visit to the co-op on the station concourse it was a run to lowestoft on the 68s (68028 to lowestoft and 68001 back to norwich),from there it was a ride on 156407 to sheringham,i was going to just spend an hour having a look round but as soon as i found out the black prince was working on the north nolfolk railway i had to have a ride (can't resist a 9F :) so it was a ride up to Holt and stopped off on return to Weybourne as the Class 101 unit was also working which brought back memorys of my bashing trips in the 80s and 90s doing GM Wayferers from sheffield to manchester via the hope valley:)On return back to sherringham it was back on another 156 back to norwich.from there on it was a move to Ipswich (90009) for an hour's vegging then a return back to norwich on another 90 set (getting them in whilst i can ;) ) and back to the premier inn

14 Day ALR -Day 5,8th Sept 2017
day 5 started with anithe run from norwich to great yarmouth and back on the class 68 set, then it was a class 90 move to Ipswich (90006) for a fours vegging then another skoda (90009) to colchester for a run on 360102 to clacton ,i was going to walk to the seafront but the weather was starting to turn so it was back on another 360 to thorpe le soken to catch a unit (321436) to walton on the naze.by this time there was more torrential rain but i braved it to walk down the pier to see the lifeboat, and then it was back on another 321 from walton to thorpe le soken for another 360 back to london liverpool street.it was on that unit i encounted one of the rudest, nastiest RPO i have encounted,he got on at colchester and when i showed my rover he snatched it out of my hand (in the wallet along with my debit card) then he asked me where was my photocard was and when i told ham you did'nt need one he tried to make out it was;nt my ticket .he went to the other end of the train to phone his higher ups to chack my ticket and then returned my rover without the slightest appology and he was reluctent to give me his name and number when i asked(i got it though imediatley sent a complaint to greater anglia ).this put a bit of a damper on a decent day up to then ,so on arrival at liverpool street it was a quick trip on the circle line to kings cross for a move to doncaster (43306 & 43308) on arrival at donny the weather had improved so instead of a train home to sheffield it was a move on 185132 to Barnetby for an hours spotting (and some fish and chips ;) ) then it was a 153 to licoln and finally a 144 back to my home shck of woodhouse ! (a shame about the gripper from the herman goring charm school spoiling the day but i managed to clear the clacton and walton branches)

14 Day ALR -Day 6,9th Sept 2017
day 6 was suposed to be a day off bashing with a trip to london for some sightseeing but i overslept so the first train of the day was the 0929 from sheffield to york stopper (150269 which makes a change from the usual pacer that works the service) and from there after picking up some food it was off to kings cross on a non stop HST (43308 & 43306 again !) and then a slow walk to Euston and my first pendo (390122 penny the penolino !!) of the rover (i hate em -send them to boothys ;) ) .i was going to do it as far as carlisle but the sight of 86259 at preston made me bail, then it was a move to Blackpool north (156465) for a walk on the golden mile to get some piccys of the heritage trams working (brush car 631 and ballon car 715 were working) it was also nice to see a few old buses working especially a very nice ribble Leyland national. i was going to wait til the Illuminations started but i thought i'd get back a bit earlier due to no trains running into piccadilly from blackpool and the Arean reopening concert,so it was another 156 back to manchester victoria and a walk through manchester town centre to piccadilly for my unit (158812) back to sheffie, so day 6 was an enjoyable day after the late start (well apart from the pendo move;) )

14 Day ALR -Day 7,10th Sept 2017
day 7 was just a trip to edinbrugh,as it was a sunday it was a late start catching the 1131 service to york, usually this service calls at doncaster but this day the line was closed into doncaster so it was a chance o ride a meridian (222006) via moorthorpe & pontefract to york, from there it was a ride begind 91132 to edinbrugh for a quick look around and then i was going to do a move to dundee, but as i was due to go north of the border the next day i bailed at Haymarketfor a bit of vegging and a trip to the co-op for some scottish snacks for the trip back -a couple of scotch pies, some caramel wafers and a bottle of irn bru (in a propper glass bottle :D )then it was a 158 back to waverley and 91106 to york and then a 220 back to sheffield

14 Day ALR -Day 8,11th Sept 2017
day 8 started at sheffield with the 0732 servicevto Manchester piccadilly (158773) after a quick trip to greggs for some breakfast it was off to preston ,the train i had planned to get (Man airport to barrow)was cancelled so i had to get a blackpool north all shacks stopper to preston to get the 1004 loco hauled service,i had a +7 at preston but we got held at a signal just before salford cresent so i checked on real time trains to make other arangements but luckily we arrived just in time to catch the tractor to barrow (37403) and then on to carlisle (37401) after a hour at carlisle stocking up and doing a bit of vegging it was off to edinbrugh waverley on the second pendo of the rover (390124) after another walk round edinbrugh it was off to do the 1707 fife circle train (both of the scotrail 68s were south of the border so todays loco was 68032) i stayed on the a rain after glenrothes and bailed at kirkcaldy for the super voayger to aberdeen (221126) for my hotel -Aberdeen central travelodge
