The Independent Brigg Line Rail Group has received a number of enquiries this week from the Worksop area asking about travelling to Cleethorpes on Bank Holiday Monday..

For those that are not aware there used to be a direct service of three trains on a Saturday only for 30 years, in May last year this was reduced to a one round trip Monday to Friday service.

This is absolutely ideal between Worksop and Cleethorpes as the train leaves at 10:14 and arrives in Cleethorpes at 1142.

Coming back customers will have to go via Doncaster and maybe Retford.

We are getting an any permitted fare of £30.60 return and £20.15 with a railcard, returning on the 1624 or 1724 TPE service, and changing at either Meadowhall or Doncaster and Retford on the latter service.

Is there any cheaper alternatives than the £30.60p return please ?

Advance tickets from Sheffield to Cleethorpes are available for £10 less. Interestingly Trainsplit shows the flexible ticket at £29.60 with no splits offered

I suspect the only thing you’ll be able to do here is buy the via Brigg off peak day return at £20.20 and then obtain a change of route excess on the return portion only. This will cost half the difference so will save about a fiver on the non railcard discounted fare. You’d have to do this at a ticket office (or on board if no ticketing facilities exist at your origin, I’m not sure if Worksop ticket office will be open Monday).

It’s important that you only excess the return portion and double check they’re only charging you half the price Unfortunately Worksop ticket office has had a selection of staff members with quite a range of knowledge from very good to “at least they’re friendly”.

If you want to go out via Brigg and return via Doncaster, you can buy the cheaper 'via Brigg' fare (the £20.20 Off-Peak Day Return is valid all day as it's a Bank Holiday) and then obtain what's known as a 'change of route excess' for the return portion, to allow you to return via Doncaster.

You're charged half the difference between the relevant fares for a change of route excess, so it would be £5.20. That would make the total cost £25.40.

I suspect to travel for much less you'll have to buy Advance tickets that tie you to specific trains.
