Would fares reform be acceptable if it led to price increases?

The problem I find with the train fares there's too many for a start and should be straight forward also if you want to get people out of cars train tickets need to be cheaper than it would be to drive somewhere and be more frequent to the suit the customer needs so they can turn up on the day instead of buying way in advance or have a nationwide Railcard but have say for £50-100 for the year but the fares definitely need sorting out

If you want to fly are there too many fares?

Low-cost airline fares are simple. Typically when you select a flight there is one fare available per "vehicle" journey, or certainly no more than three if they package things.

There might be multiple levels, but like with Advances that isn't important, the key thing is that only one is applicable at any given time.

Switzerland has mobile ticketing where the fare is calculated using the phone's location according to when told your phone when you started and ended your trip. It even works for high fares, given the maximum 1st class single fare is over £150 (without any discount). They could use smartcards but they prefer phones as they don't have ticket barriers.

So I wouldn't worry about smartcards or contactless not being viable for long distance pay as you go.

If people looked at (longer distance) rail travel in the same way they do air travel there wouldn't be too many fares. There are probably more levels of fare for air travel, but they aren't seen as relevant.
