The ICE 3 variant was particularly prone to this. In 2010 the trains encountered the hottest summer since they were introduced and the air conditioning simply couldn’t cope. Their sealed metal tube design meant that the internal temperature quickly became intolerable when the air conditioning failed and many passengers required medical attention.

Hopefully the current refurbishment of class 403 and 406 will address this.

It is running and will continue to do so, just after the summer holidays (so either Monday 10 August or Wednesday 12 August -- summer holidays always end on a Tuesday in North Rhine-Westphalia), they will stop running on weekdays until the summer of 2021.
