I said north of Birmingham ;) hence my comment about splitting.

It is just how many people say from Stirling would think about splitting, they will just think they have being robbed and fly next time. So Virgin will lose a customer because of XC!

There is also a VT Only SVR between Wolverhampton and Edinburgh. North of Wolverhampton and south of Lancaster, all fares to/from Edinburgh are priced by VT and the SVR's have the 2T restriction.

Travelling from Warwickshire shows the difference

Nuneaton - Inverness SVR £129.40 (2T Restriction) priced by VWC
Coventry - Inverness SVR £145.30 (2V restriction) priced by CC

incidently the FOR prices are Cov - INV £609.00 (CC)
.......................................NUN - INV £480.00 (VWC)

But that does not help people travelling NORTH of Edinburgh / Glasgow who still get ripped of by XC despite not using their trains. For them they need to buy tickets such as Rugby - Stirling which is priced by XC. As I say how many of Joe public would think about doing that!

The post above shows the problem perfectly! Maybe Virgin should take out an advert in the Scottish press. "Travel to Birmingham, buy a ticket to Nuneaton and save £ - it is valid to Birmingham" watch XC scream then.

This list of XC only fares will be withdrawn from the next fares round this Sunday. The paragraph at the bottom of the list seems to acknowledge this, and the fares no longer appear in Avantix Traveller.

One example of an excellent value fare was Glasgow Central to Newcastle. £56 for an SOR or £115 for an FOR. Customers will now have to buy the Any Permitted fare (priced by EC) which is £123 for an SOR or £195 for an FOR. :(

Oh well - it was good while it lasted!

Another example of Arriva XC ripping people off.

Bring back Virgin to XC (or anyone other than these bandits at Arriva)

I completely agree. What's stopping Virgin from advising people to split their tickets? They'd get much more ORCATS revenue!

I think the TOCs keep quiet about these things as few of them want to spark all-out war (things like Chiltern/Virgin are different as they are at least ctickets for completely different services).

I have to say im very disappointed by this news. I relied on the fact that I could make emergency trips from Glasgow to see my elderly father in Newcastle when necessary, knowing i'd never have to pay above £30 (which I always thought very reasonable for a last minute departure!) - It's now going to leave me with no other option than to take a Virgin train to Carlisle and then Northern to Newcastle - total cost £36.20 - Even though around £10 more than I'd need to pay right now, it's still around £20 cheaper than going via Edinburgh on either XC/EC - makes you wonder why TOC's sometimes make decisions that ultimately drive customers away?

It's worth noting, however, that some excellent value XC Advance fares are still available for that route at short notice. For example, for travel tomorrow morning (in less than 12 hours time!) I can see some Standard Class fares at £21.50 and some First Class fares at £33.50. Quite a bargain!

Good spot, I never thought about looking at that time range, for some reason I had it in my mind that there was a 6pm deadline for some reason?

Cut-off varies amongst the TOCs. It is probably beneficial to them to have the 23.59 cut-off:
6.30pm:
"Richard, I need you to go to a meeting in Manchester tomorrow"
*checks fares*
"I can do it for £95 on Advances, boss"
"Fantastic - go on then"

versus

"The walk-up fare is £296!!!!"
"Never mind, then"
