I'm looking to travel York - Whitby on 9 September. I'd like to use the cheaper (not Darlington) off peak day return but all the York - Middlesbrough trains for leg 1 in the morning go via Darlington. Is there any way I can use the cheaper ticket and still travel in the morning? Thanks

Unless there's some engineering work resulting in changes to the route, the Trans-Pennine Express trains should avoid Darlington: the 07:32, 08:23 or the 09:26 would get you to Middlesbrough for the 10:38 departure to Whitby, although the later one leaves only 8 minutes for the connection. Given the next train to Whitby is not for another four hours, it would probably be wise to get one of the earlier trains!

First train is the 10:42 from York arr. Middlesbrough 11:38 (via Thornaby)

Which then leaves you in M'brough until 14:17

x40 bus leaves york 9:51 arrives 12:07

Train fares are:

York - Whitby (not via Darlington) £12.80
Any Permitted £27.80

You can add a Northallerton - Middlesbrough Off Peak Day Return for £7.20, so £20, and this would work for the 8:21 from York connecting with the 9:11 from Darlington to Whitby or the 9:37 from York changing at Darlington and Stockton

The OP wants Sunday trains. Different timetable.

You can ask for a change of route excess on the outward portion of your ticket. The calculation for changing the route of a return ticket in one direction only is half the difference between the fare paid and the cheapest ticket on the route you wish to take that's available for immediate travel. By my rough calculation it should be about £7.50 on top of what you've already paid. If you were to buy this for the outward portion you'd be able to travel via Darlington on the outward leg only.

I came in from Falkirk this Morning. Arrived at Darlington at 0855 and caught the 0859 to M'boro ariving 30 minutes later to connect with the 1038 to Whitby.

If you arrive early the Town Centre is not far away with plenty of Cafes etc.

For this journey, I would recommend the X40 bus for this trip.
The timings are a nice time of day, and you get to see some wonderful countryside on the way.
Single fare York to Whitby is £10.00, with a return at £13.00
0951 bus arrives 1207, then there is a return at 1750, getting back to York at 2008.
Yorkshire Coastliner buses are very comfortable and well looked after.
