Please can someone confirm routes that are valid from York - Whitby? Is it just valid York - Middlesborough - Whitby?

There is a cheap ticket, £11.50 CDR which is valid 'Not Darlington'.
It's £24.80 to go via Darlington.

Going from York to Middlesbrough is also a lot more expensive via Darlington.

Unless you fancy paying a lot of money for the "Any Permitted", then you have to take the route via Yarm. The "Not Darlington" ticket is very good value, at £11.50. The first trains this is valid on Mon-Fri are 0926 from York, and 0852 from Whitby. (It's only £11.10 from Whitby)

If you want to go via Darlington, then the price is rather ridiculous at £24.70 to return same day, or £28.90 if travelling before the 0926 and/or if returning another day. No-one would pay that - they'd just get the bus instead (£11.00, 0813 from York arriving 1037 at Whitby, although I suppose if someone had to be in Whitby for 9am then they may pay the extortionate fare as there is no bus that arrives in time, but you can get to Whitby for 0841 by train)

I've found the ticket is accepted to Scarborough if you inform the guard that you are cycling along the former railway line to Whitby ;)

If you really want to go via the rather expensive to visit dump that is Darlington, then you can always get a train that calls at Northallerton and then get a Northallerton-Thornaby ticket (£6.40 CDR / £8.80 SDR).

Also if you want to go via Darlington one way and avoid Darlington the other, then get the cheaper ticket and pay the excess. The excess is half the difference, in this case it's £6.60 to upgrade the Not Darlington CDR into an Any Permitted CDR one way.

you can buy a seperate ticket to Middlesbrough, it's only £8.70 from there.

or you can just buy a York to Whitby ticket and use it from Thornaby!

:???: It cost me around £15.00 from Thornaby to get to whitby.
It's cheaper to buy from York and start 'short' :p and even cheaper to split at MBR.

This has been documented a couple of times before, on 4 July and 15 November take a look at those topics for some more detail, including other examples where such anomalies exist.

Crazy, but true.

Thornaby-Whitby SDR 14.00
vs
Thornaby-Middlesbrough SDR 2.10
Middlesbrough-Whitby SDR 8.20
Total = 10.30

York-Whitby 11.50 (but not valid until the 0926 from YRK, so 1023 from TBY).

In that case, you might as well have bought a Tyne Tees Day Ranger at £17. Could have gone to Whitby and back and then took a trip up to Newcastle, Hexham, Northallerton, a lot of places!

Thanks for all the advice. Bought the cheaper ticket as suggested. Went for the day from York - Whitby today stopping off at Castleton Moor for a walk on the moors and a drink in the Eskdale Inn by the station. On the way back returned via Darlington and no conductor was interested in charging the excess :D

Good! I once did York - Eaglescliffe, before it was routed "Not Darlington" it was called "Route Direct". I travelled on what I believe is the most direct route available on franchised TOCs, which is via Darlington, given the rule against doubling back should be adhered to. XC not interested in charging any excess, but a poser of a Northern guard was interested in saying how we should not go via Darlington as it was not a direct route and how he "should" charge us the excess but would "let us off this time". In my opinion that is an unacceptable response. The guard should either happily let you off, or they should courteously charge the correct excess. Telling a customer off is absolutely not acceptable. Needless to say, if he had tried to charge the excess, I would have questioned the legitimacy as there is no other way to do the journey (York-Eaglescliffe) without doubling back (unless you get GC, which was not an option until recently and only now gives 4 journey opportunities per day).

Such a good little ticket, although quite hard to find any mention of it in stations now, couldn't find a leaflet anywhere at York, Darlington, Middlesbrough or Newcastle.

Stopped off there one day too, just to go to the pub. Unfortunately the pub was shut so I had a walk into the village. Nice tea room there, they do a good cream tea, highly reccommended.
