How does Waterloo only get 60 million passengers yet each SWR train I get is packed like sardines?

True it wasn't especially reliable, and the Reading via Hounslow was slow. However, the timetable relied on a Staines to Weybridge shuttle that got in the way at Staines. In 2003 there was some attempt led by the SRA to remove awkward services such as the Staines to Weybridge shuttle which saw...

How does Waterloo only get 60 million passengers yet each SWR train I get is packed like sardines?

In most cases the Hounslow loop stations have other options nearby such as the Piccadilly and District Lines. There are plenty of suburban stations in London which only have a half hourly service

Severn Valley Diesel Gala 2024 16th-19th May

No use if the said locomotive only runs between Kidderminster and Bewdley in that direction.

Paddington to Plymouth in 2.5 hours?

That is as much because of the twists and turns resulting from the landscape as the stations on the way. Tiverton Parkway to Plymouth non stop is similar by road and train given the road and rail network.

All trains calling at all stations for suburban lines

That only works though if you run all the trains the same distance. At the moment, the Reading trains miss out stations to concentrate the passengers travelling out to Slough, Burnham, Taplow, Maidenhead and Twyford on one service and inner suburban passengers on another. The frequency...

Paddington to Plymouth in 2.5 hours?

Try the Sectional Appendix, which sets them out in diagrammatic form. https://sacuksprodnrdigital0001.blob.core.windows.net/sectional-appendix/Sectional%20Appendix%20full%20PDFs%20March%2024/Western%20and%20Wales%20Sectional%20Appendix%20March%202024.pdf

Rail nationalisation: ideas, suggestions, predictions etc

Very unlikely to be the case in my view. A single unified Intercity could well adopt the fare structure in the LNER trial, as it is RDG policy and the direction of travel, particularly if it could then promise no standing passengers. A commercially run Intercity operation would want to charge...

All trains calling at all stations for suburban lines

c2c is actually a bad example of what you are looking for. The District Line runs alongside and calls at all stations out to Upminster. When all c2c services called at Barking, passengers chose to use the c2c service from there instead of the District Line because it is faster. If the...

Severn Valley Diesel Gala 2024 16th-19th May

In many cases, the delays are caused by people making connections at Kidderminster, particularly if the departing train is already well loaded and difficult to accommodate more passengers.

Trivia : Which TOCs have consistent train direction?

The 700s certainly aren't all the same way round either, although this effectively only dictates which middle coach the universal toilet is in. For the original question c2c 357s are all kept the same way round SWR 159s and 444s are timetabled to always have first class at the London end.

Class 350/2 for SWR if 458 fails.

Well, an all desiro fleet apart from the large fleet of 701s. However, this can be done without 350s and without 458s. The point is that the extra capacity the 458s would have provided isn't now needed.

    Class 458 Future Speculation

Eversholt have nothing to do with the 458s. Porterbrook assets.

    Class 458 Future Speculation

Southern / Gatwick Express is an Electrostar operation. The last thing it needs is a non standard fleet complicating that.

    Class 458 Future Speculation

I'm not sure that would be helped by also having the 350s. The 360 fleet at 21 units is in theory a perfect size for EMR.

Class 350/2 for SWR if 458 fails.

In what sense are the 458s going to fail? The previous postings indicate that SWR don't need the capacity that the 458s were due to offer. In that context, SWR doesn't need 350s, even if they could be converted to run on DC and be treated as extra 450s.

    Class 458 Future Speculation

They would in no sense be 'perfect' for either Southern and Southeastern particularly when considered against the fact that Southern only operate Electrostars, which comes with considerable operational advantages.

    Sunday Service Paddington to Bath

The Sunday morning service on many long distance routes from London is constrained by two track railway and the availability of traincrew. Historically it has been a time of the week when fewer people travelled. Yesterday, all trains from Paddington to Reading were on the relief lines from...

London Northwestern Railway services merge into West Coast Franchise

It would still allow passengers to use the 'Avanti' services south of Milton Keynes and north of Rugby, while preventing use of what are currently the LNR Trent Valley services.

    GWR fleet procurement

Passengers don't distribute themselves between services to take account of the formations. I saw a five coach service from Worcester to Paddington yesterdat morning go out full and standing from Reading with more people trying to cram aboard despite passengers being told there were longer...
