I'm travelling from Durham to Bristol on the 1st of March and the rail situation is so dire that for the first time in my life I am taking a British domestic flight (Newcastle to Bristol). Was £18 when I booked it but seems like prices have increased quite a bit since then.

I got HT up the MML in early January and I was convinced it ran electric until Kettering - I'm pretty sure RTT said it was and it certainly sounded like the diesel engine didn't start until the wires ended, when everything became an awful lot noisier.

I thought the blunt nose was primarily to reduce the length a little so 10 car units could fit on platforms. Seems like other people have had basically the same discussion upthread and don't know whether the chicken or the egg came first but in any case it all works out quite nicely

Would this not also be something to do with aerodynamics since if I understand correctly the 810s are flatter than the 80xs?

Why were the proposals ruled out? Has the case not changed since then with TPE struggling for stock and the new Northumberland line providing pathing opportunities? Someone in the other thread said 6 paths per hour up that section of the ECML. 2x LNER, 1 TPE, 1 XC and still leaves space for XC...

1000% agree with this, my solution imo Northern should link up an Acklington train every hour with the Saltburn-Darlington train, I think it would get really healthy demand. If it needs some investment to get it running, then it may well be worth it. Give Chester-Le-Street an hourly service...

I don't really think it's directly down to students considering most Durham students are from London or the South East. There are a lot of uni employees who commute though, I suppose a growing number of students are commuting in from Newcastle as well now because accommodation costs in Durham...
