Haven't seen this posted elsewhere. Line closure and replacement of the Downs Park Road overbridge north of Hackney Downs station for 16 days between Saturday 20th July and Sunday 6th August.

LO service suspension, Hertford East services to be diverted to Stratford, Cambridge and Stansted services will be diverted via Seven Sisters and will not serve Tottenham Hale.

Passengers are advised that between 20 July and 4 August (inclusive):

  • No London Overground services will run between Hackney Downs and Chingford stations. This means there will be no rail service to or from Clapton, St James Street, Walthamstow Central, Wood Street, Highams Park and Chingford stations.
  • The London Underground Victoria line from Walthamstow Central will be operating throughout this time to help people get around, including the Night Tube on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Local buses will be running across the affected route.
  • Passengers wanting to travel between Liverpool Street and Hackney Downs / Bethnal Green will be able to use London Overground services running to and from Enfield Town and Cheshunt.
  • London Overground services to and from Enfield Town and Cheshunt may have different timetables during the 16 days, so regular passengers should check before they set off.
  • Greater Anglia services that usually run between Liverpool Street and Hertford East will start and finish at Stratford instead. The usual Stratford – Meridian Water services won’t run, but other services will make additional stops at both Meridian Water and Northumberland Park. Additionally, Liverpool Street to Cambridge / Stansted Airport services will be diverted via and call at Seven Sisters instead of Tottenham Hale. Bishop’s Stortford to Stratford services will not operate, with passengers advised to use alternative services.

Can't see why the Bishops Stortford to Stratford services are suspended, surely these could run alongside the Hertford to Stratford services? There are usually 4 tph via Lea Bridge anyway.

Perhaps pathing conflicts caused by the Cambridges/Stansteds being diverted south of Cheshunt?

Choosing the current hour northbound, the Cambridge runs through Cheshunt at 18 and 48, the Bishops Stortford at 25 and 52, the Stansted at 15, 29, 44 and 59.

Of course, the we can't see the timetables for the diverted services yet and how they're retimed, but that looks the likely reason as turnaround times at LST can be very tight as it is.

Do they really mean "Over the 16 consecutive days, engineers from Network Rail’s contractor, Murphy, will demolish the old bridge and start building the new one"? Do they expect to take longer than that to finish but train services to resume while they're still working on the bridge?

Yes. It’s extremely common for the highway and utility works to take many weeks or even months longer than the railway closure. As it says on the linked NR article:

“Work began on site last month, and part of Downs Park Road is already closed to vehicles. The closure will be extended to pedestrians and cyclists from July 2024. The project is expected to be completed, and Downs Park Road fully reopened, by early 2025.”

Perhaps it's the same contractors wwe'd closed Bedhampton Station footbridge back in September 2023 for a repaint, then started repainting it early January.
Bridge is still closed and still only partly painted... o_O

Isn't the Bishops Stortford service just likely to be diverted to Hertford East?

Should be possible to run both. The Hertford trains run parallel to the Meridian Water trains in both directions through Tottenham Hale. So the Hertford trains could use the Meridian Water paths south of Tottenham and interwork with the Stortford trains.

Think this should be Hertford East services.

Most of the schedules are on RTT but half the down Stansted schedules are missing. Off peak pattern as follows.

Half hourly Stratford to Hertford East calling all stations.
Half hourly Liverpool Street to Cambridge North with normal calling patterns north of Cheshunt.
Quarter hourly Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport with normal calling patterns north of Cheshunt.

Of note, this leaves Roydon, Harlow Mill and Sawbridgeworth with only one train per hour. The latter is rather surprising.

Will Meridian Water still be running?

Can't just be me that thinks a Hackney Downs - Chingford bus in the scheduled 45 min is very ambitious in the rush hour. It's half hour off peak direct in a car...

Diverted trains seem to do okay via Edmonton, but I am expecting at least one meltdown when something inevitably falls over.

Usually when Cambridge / Stansted services are diverted via Seven Sisters the journey takes longer than running via Tottenham Hale due to following all stations LO services, so probably run out of trains and drivers if you run the Bishops Stortford services too.

Wow. That’s seriously poor that neither the Bishops Stortford or Meridian Water trains are running.
See my response from the previous thread above.
