Saturday 01 July 1978 (straight from work onto the overnight to Scotland)
47210 ED 1950 (PD) London Kings Cross - Aberdeen (Edinburgh to Dundee).
A bit of a let down motive power wise having started out with 55011 GD from Kings Cross on the Thursday evening as far as York before carrying on to Edinburgh behind 40165 HA.
There then followed a few empty haulage book leaps before the positioning move for rare track mileage.

27004 ED 0738 Dundee - Glasgow Queen Street (Dundee to Perth).
27043 ED 0640 Glasgow Queen Street - Dundee (Perth to Dundee).
40063 HA 0719 Aberdeen - Glasgow Queen Street (Dundee to Perth).
27044 ED 0844 Glasgow Queen Street - Dundee (Perth to Dundee).
25093 ED 0908 Glasgow Queen Street - Aberdeen additional (Dundee to Arbroath). Bonus! Wasn't expecting a rat.
47241 CF 1025 Aberdeen - London Kings Cross (Arbroath to Inverkeithing).
The main reason for my Scottish incursion
DMU (1* 2 car class 101 + 2* 3 car class 101) 1305 Edinburgh - Rosyth Dockyard (Inverkeithing to Rosyth Dockyard platform)
then walk back to Inverkeithing for more red penning (not my number one choice of motive power)
47553 HA 1445 Edinburgh - Aberdeen (Inverkeithing to Kirkcaldy).
47045 ED 1235 Inverness - Edinburgh (Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh).
47414 FP 1645 Edinburgh - Aberdeen (Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy).
47269 ED 1435 Aberdeen - Edinburgh (Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh).
47045 ED 1735 Edinburgh - Inverness (Edinburgh to Perth).
40086 GD 1735 Aberdeen - Glasgow Queen Street (Perth to Glasgow Queen Street).
The intention was to catch the above to Glasgow the saunter over to Glasgow Central for an overnight south but as I emerged out of the Cowlairs Tunnel I spotted...............
25008 ED 2114 Glasgow Queen Street - Dundee (Glasgow Queen Street to Stirling). Not turning that down!!!
Luckily for me there was a train to take me back to London from Stirling on the Saturday night book ending the day with some more class 40 mileage.
40158 HA 1928 Inverness to London Euston (Stirling to Mossend [mp 92¼]) for 86034 WN onward through the night.
But that wasn't the end of the 40 mileage as 40120 LO was provided to drag the AL6 from Preston to Crewe by way of Lowton Junction, Manchester Piccadilly and the Styal line.

Sunday 01 July 1984
After finishing my night shift I discovered the Rosslare to Fishguard ferry had been severely delayed. A TOPS print out showed an additional train running from Cardiff to London Paddington in the timings of 1A03.

That is quite an epic day in Scotland - and a good reminder of the variety of traction on offer at the time. The various Type 2s that spluttered around singly and in pairs certainly added to the atmosphere.

Absolutely though there were too many class 47s for my liking out that Saturday. Given I had to be at Inverkeithing for the Dockyard shuttle I was a bit stuck in trying to avoid them.

i preferred the type 2s and EE type 4s. By this time the class 24s had gone and the Highland mainline was passed for 47s. I was lucky to bag a 25/0 for haulage.

I would like to reach 180, but not so badly that I'm about to travel all the way to the south coast next week for 37703 on the Swanage Railway. I'm sure it will appear at a more northerly gala at some point.

2nd July 2022

My confidence in the railway gods was well placed! Sure enough 37703 was one of the guests at the ELR Diesel Gala, so yesterday I made the 1-hour trip across the Pennines.

I started the day at Ramsbottom, and first move of the day was resident Syphon 37109 to Bury...37109.JPG

However, before we could leave we had to wait for a later running freight service and the "TransPennine Express Service to Rawtenstall" to arrive. Here is 50015 on the freight/brakevanex...

50015.JPG

At Bury the Syphon was ripped, and replaced with Warship 832...

832.JPG

As the train the other way was a Wagon, I sampled the hydraulic to Heywood and back. Then dropping onto Felix the Cat, aka 68031 to Heywood for 37109 through to Rawstenstall. Whoever wrote "101 Uses for a Dead Cat" needs to add number 102: Providing extra load for a Syphon so that there is even more thrash through the tunnel on the ELR!

Back down to Bury the Cat & Syphon were paired up, where they came off with the Tug going on the front and the pair of bombs going on the back. I wasn't desperate to do 60046, but it was a positioning move for the 20s, so I did it to Heywood...

60046.JPG

So then it was D8096 + D8107 thrashing their way up to Ramsbottom for 50015 back to Heywood, where finally I got to take my prize: 37703 up to Rawstenatall then back to Ramsbottom, where I ended my day...

37703.JPG

A great day - plenty of variety, big crowds and drivers putting on a performance to entertain the cranks. And despite being on the west of the Pennines, the rain stopped and the sun came out!

SUNDAY 3rd JULY 1983:

The start of my employment hiatus! I had given up my train planning career in Scotland and travelled down from Glasgow to my grandmother's place on Teesside the previous day in a hired van with two Glesca lads to (temporarily) deposit my meagre possessions in her attic. Now I was off to Ireland for a few months in pursuit of a young lady teacher and lots of CIE/NIR haulage. Unfortunately, it didn't work out with the young lady....but she and her husband are still very good friends with my wife and myself and we visit them every now and then. The day started with a quick visit to Great Ayton to see relatives of my mother's....and then I headed for Holyhead and the night ferry to Ireland:

E53188/59077/53170/53149/59085/53265 Middlesbrough-Great Ayton (09 46 Darlington-Whitby)
Bus: Great Ayton-Middlesbrough
E54052/51226/54386/53248 Middlesbrough-Darlington via Tees Yard Goods Lines. (14 45 from Saltburn)

Seemed like you had a great day there too. Glad to see you roped in an errant 37.

By theres some stunning moves in this thread. I always get move envy in this thread.

After finishing my night shift I discovered the Rosslare to Fishguard ferry had been severely delayed. A TOPS print out showed an additional train running from Cardiff to London Paddington in the timings of 1A03.

Was that some kind of Spin and Win Tour. Some fantastic traction there. Weren't 37100 and 37074 long term GD machines. I'm sure 074 went over to the dark side and transferred to TE.
That certainly was a day and a half though.
